ACADEMY GRAD
Sanchez assigned Air Force 2nd Lt. Eva R. Sanchez, a 2001 graduate of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., has been assigned to the 18th Contracting Squadron at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa City, Japan.
At the academy, Sanchez graduated first in her legal studies major, was named Outstanding Cadet in Legal Studies, and received the Brigadier General Marcos E. Kinevan Award. She was on the dean's list every semester during her four years at the academy and several times received the Commandant's Pin, signifying leadership within the cadet wing.
She was a member of the fencing team during her freshman and sophomore years, competing in Junior Olympics meets, and also completed the free fall jump program to earn the Air Force Jump Badge.
Sanchez, a daughter of Reinaldo Sanchez and Wildemina Ocasio Sanchez, Oak Avenue, Boardman, graduated in 1997 from Boardman High School.
VETERANS
Memorial service
The Tri-State Detachment, Marine Corps League, will have a memorial service at 3 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Beirut Memorial, state Route 616 in Struthers, in commemoration of the 1983 terrorist bombing that killed 241 marines and sailors, among them Cpl. Edward Johnston of Struthers.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Johnston, were instrumental in having the Peacekeepers Memorial placed at the Lake Hamilton site. The Tri-State Detachment will provide the color guard, rifle squad and bugler. All veterans organizations and the public are invited.
Free health screenings
The Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 325 New Castle Road, Butler, Pa., will offer free health screenings and flu shots from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the medical center; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at American Legion Post 299, Sharon.
Veterans applying for doctor's appointments must provide a copy of their discharge papers.
Also, the Butler VA Clinic will provide free flu shots to veterans from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Oct. 22, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 31.

PROMOTIONS
Officer commissioned
Lori A. Pluchinsky was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force after graduating from the 12-week Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Pluchinsky, a personnel officer, is assigned to Headquarters Office Of Special Investigations, Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Md.
She is a daughter of Robert E. and Jewel A. Pluchinsky, 8076 Cliffview Drive, Poland. She graduated in 1994 from Poland High School and in 1998 from Youngstown State University.
Martino gets new rank
Army Lt. Col. Diane L. Martino was promoted to her current rank while serving as chief of the Training Analysis Management Branch, Training Division, at the Pentagon. Before that, she was commandant of Joint Headquarters Centre, Heidelberg, Germany.
Martino, a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Martino, 3336 N. Wendover Circle, Youngstown, graduated from Chaney High School and was the Distinguished Military Graduate from the ROTC program at Youngstown State University. She earned a bachelor's degree in law administration and received a regular Army commission in June 1985. She also has a master's degree in executive development for public administration from Ball State University, Ind.
Martino has served at duty stations in the United States and overseas, is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College among numerous other military schools, and has received several decorations, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Kosovo Campaign Medal.
Petty officer first class
First Class Petty Officer Brian D. Addicott, a son of David and Sylvia Addicott, Brookfield, was promoted to his current rank while assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Chase, based in California.
Addicott, a 1992 graduate of Brookfield High School, his wife, Giselle, and their sons, Lachlan and Griffin, live in San Diego, Calif.
TRAINING
Flying in Black Hawk
Army 2nd Lt. Rebecca Jarabek graduated from Aviation Rotary-Wing Flight School and is flying the UH60 Black Hawk helicopter, preparing to be a medevac pilot.
She is slated to be stationed at Camp Paige, Korea, as a medical service officer in January. Jarabek, a daughter of Joseph and MrylynnJarabek, Julian Street, Youngstown, graduated in 1996 from Cardinal Mooney High School and is a 2000 graduate of the Military Academy.
