Warren JFK has 8-shot lead in Div. III state golf tourney

VINDICATOR STAFF/WIRE REPORTS
COLUMBUS -- After the first round of Friday's state golf tournament, the Warren Kennedy High boys team finds itself in a familiar place -- first.
The defending Division III state champs shot 309 and are eight strokes ahead of second-place Columbus Academy at Ohio State's Scarlet Course. "We're in the hunt," said JFK coach Bob Todd. "We're hoping to be able to shoot that tomorrow, and if we do we have a pretty good chance of repeating."
Kokrak leads: Junior Jason Kokrak shot par 72 to lead the Eagles and the field, followed by senior Chris Macali (75), sophomore Colin Clemente (77), junior Jim Scheiber (85) and senior Kevin Costello (90).
JFK's 9:30 a.m. start was delayed an hour due to rain, but Todd said the course played "great" once play resumed. The Eagles play the second, and final, round today.
"We want to play the same as we did today," Todd said. "We played absolutely marvelous."
Meanwhile, Sebring senior Cory Schneider shot a first-round 80 (42-38).
Chillicothe Unioto, which finished 10th last year, shot a 301 for a one-stroke lead over Lima Shawnee in Division II. Sandusky Perkins is third at 303, Orrville shot a 304, and Lemon-Monroe, Portsmouth West and Granville are tied for fifth at 305.
Canton Central Catholic's J.D. Shonhoft was the only player to finish the first round under par, taking the Division II lead with a 1-under 69 performance on the OSU Gray Course.
The boys Division I and girls tournaments will be held Oct. 19 and 20 at Ohio State.
