YOUNGSTOWN -- Things went better the second time around in Mahoning County commissioners' attempt to find a contractor to build a parking area for the disabled in front of the courthouse.
Three contractors have submitted bids for the project, said James Fortunato, purchasing director.
Aberdeen Corp. of Youngstown was the apparent low bidder at $17,500. Other bids were from Utility Contracting of Youngstown, $28,840, and Kreidler Construction of Poland, $30,812.
Fortunato said county officials will meet next week with Aberdeen to make sure the bid meets all county specifications. If all is clear, work should begin shortly afterward and be completed by the end of the year.
It was the second time commissioners sought bids for the project, which will include construction of two parking spaces along Market Street, near Front Street. No one submitted a bid the first time.
Also included: The project also will include construction of a handicap-accessible entrance to the county administration building, which is behind the courthouse, Fortunato said.
The spaces on Market Street will be near an automatic door on the southeast corner of the courthouse, where there is already a wheelchair ramp. The door is locked, though, so people who want to use it must ring a buzzer and wait for a deputy sheriff to let them in.
Commissioners plan to leave that door open during normal business hours, allowing people to get inside and out of the weather. A second door will be built just inside the building, which is where visitors will have to summon a deputy to let them into the main lobby.
