ROCKY RIVER -- Boardman High juniors Gina Peretti and Stephanie Berry defeated Lisa Bockoff and Ana Avolio of Lyndhurst Brush, 6-2, 6-0, and Amber Rucker and Lauren Gibbons of Shaker Heights, 6-3, 6-4, in the Division I district tennis tournament Thursday at Tri-City Park courts.
Those wins put the Spartans in semifinals and assured themselves of a return trip to the state tournament.
Saturday at 9 a.m. Peretti and Berry will face Gina Tamburro and Claire Bing of Massillon Jackson in a semifinal match. The Spartans defeated the Jackson team in a sectional semifinal match last week.
Boardman coach Jeffrey Hammerton pointed out that there is a possibility that Peretti and Berry could face Sarah Lehman and Meggie Glassburn of Massillon Jackson in the district title match, which would be a repeat of the championship match last week.
Hammerton said, "We were down 4-2 in the second set and the girls put together the four best games they have played all year to pull out the victory. "If they continue to play like they played the last four games, it will be very difficult to beat them in the district."
Div. II: CANTON -- Sarah Lyras of Cardinal Mooney defeated Sara Crane of Walsh Jesuit, 6-1, 6-0, and Elizabeth Spirks of Hathaway Brown, 6-2, 6-4 at the Hall of Fame Racquet Club.
Lyras earned her fourth straight trip to the state tournament next week. She will meet Emily Howard of Walsh Jesuit in the semifinals Saturday at 9 a.m.
"Sarah played exceptionally well," said Mooney coach Sandy Ketchem. "The first match wasn't very competitive and she totally dominated her opponent.
"Spirks was a worthy opponent and Sarah earned everything she got. She used deep penetrating ground strokes and hit the lines with many shots and kept it deep in the corners.
"Sarah was down in the second set 3-4 and put on a strong finish to win the final three games and close out the match."
In doubles, Ashley Kelly and Katherina Martin of West Branch, who began tournament play last week unseeded, earned a berth to state with victories over Liz Wheeler and Erin Schwartz of Cleveland Orange, 6-4, 6-2, and Molly McCluskey and Shelby Vojtech of Walsh Jesuit, 6-3, 6-3.
Karly Fedina and Erin Gallagher of Mooney lost to Morgan and Lindsey Marsh of Medina Highland 6-3, 6-1 in an opening-round match.
Amanda Friedrich and Erin Bennett of Poland defeated Kelly Gaskill and Christina Lanzieri of Laurel, 6-7 (7-2), 6-2, 7-5, then lost to Natalie Stevens and Stephanie Sanker of Bay Village, 6-7 (7-4), 6-4, 6-2. Friedrich and Bennett will return Saturday to play for fifth place, which would qualify them for the state tournament.
Sarah and Audrey Evans of Poland were eliminated in a first-round match by Lindsey Fleissner and Ashley Kurts of Walsh Jesuit, 7-5, 6-2.
Sylvia Pociask of Poland dropped an first-round singles match to Jamie Nelson of Wooster Triway, 6-0, 6-0.
Tatiana Volochkovich of East Palestine lost a first-round match to Shivani Arora of Canton Central Catholic, 6-1, 6-1.
East Palestine coach Harry Musser said, "Volochkovich was new to this kind of competition and Shivani was a seasoned veteran.
"We had to move indoors [because of rain] and were on Shivani's home court where she practices and that was advantageous for her."
Ashley Hoff of Liberty was eliminated by Jaclyn Spirtos of Medina Highland, 6-1, 6-0.
