Mooney ties Boardman to win first SVC crown



Ken "Kiki" Willis scored for the Cardinals in a 1-1 tie, as they won the SVC title with a 3-0-1 record.
BOARDMAN -- Cardinal Mooney High freshman striker Ken "Kiki" Willis scored a goal late in the first half on an assist from junior Pat Walker, as the Cardinals tied Boardman 1-1 in a boys soccer match Thursday.
The tie gave Mooney (11-3-1, 3-0-1) its first-ever Steel Valley Conference boys soccer championship.
With 10 minutes remaining in the contest, Jason Ludban scored for Boardman (9-3-4, 1-2-1) on an assist by Matt Ausmann.
Joel Monaco, goalkeeper for Boardman had seven saves and eight stops. Tim Reigrut, keeper, had five saves and seven stops for Mooney.
Chaney 3, Canton Timken 0: CANTON -- Sebrina Crincic, Adam Garica and Luis Castillo each scored a goal for the Cowboys (6-8-2).
Dwin Moran, Crincic and Garcia had an assist apiece. Dave Copanic, goalkeeper, had seven saves.
Chaney had an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Crestview 6, United 1:COLUMBIANA -- Ken Wagenhouser scored three goals for the Rebels (8-5-2). Chris Cook added two and Danielle Orville finished with one. Jonathan Kinkead and Cook each had two assists, while Mike Herstine and Chad Vollnogle had one apiece.
Girls: YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Shaina Drummond and sophomores Jessica Kausits and Katie Frank scored goals, as Ursuline defeated Newton Falls 3-0. Ursuline improved to 4-8-3 and Newton Falls fell to 1-11-3. On Wednesday, Ursuline tied Cardinal Mooney, 1-1, on Drummond's free kick.
Girard 3, Liberty 1: GIRARD -- April Courtney, Jenny Sopkovich and Morgan Tondo each scored a goal for the Indians (8-8). Leah Neff and Sopkovich had an assist apiece. Keeper Angela Dipiero had 11 saves.
Amy Banner scored the goal for the Leopards (6-7-3). Rachel Tharp had 16 saves.
West Branch 2, Salem 1: BELOIT -- Laura Bandy scored twice for the Warriors (6-8-1). Lizzie Jesko scored for the Quakers (0-12-4).
The match was tied at 1-1 at the break. Bandy scored with about five minutes remaining for the win.
Carissa Wayland had both assists for the Warriors. Nicole Eakin had the Quaker assist.
West Branch goalie Rachael Kocher and Salem keeper Matte DeJane each had eight saves.
