BEAVER
Announcements: Trustee Chairman Larry Wehr said an odor that has been drawing complaints from residents for more than 10 years has hopefully been eliminated. Township officials and residents said the strong smell was coming from the compost pile at the Ohio Valley Mushroom Farm on South Avenue, but investigations by state and county agencies could not prove the origin. Wehr said the farm is no longer making its own compost, so the smell should be gone, but if residents notice an odor, they should call the township office.
* Road Superintendent John Stear said the following county roads will have snow and ice control handled by Mahoning County this winter and if residents have a problem with the condition of their road, they should call (330) 799-1581: New Buffalo Road, south of state Route 165 to Columbiana; Blosser Road; West Pine Lake Road between state Route 7 and Beaver-Springfield Road; West Garfield Road between state Route 164 and state Route 7 and also between state Route 46 and Green-Beaver Road; County Line Road between state Route 14 and state Route 7; Lipply Road; Renkenberger Road between Green-Beaver Road and state Route 46 and also between New Buffalo Road and state Route 164.
SCHOOL BOARDS
YOUNGSTOWN
The board of education approved Tuesday a report by its architects calling for an estimated $884,279 worth of roof replacements next summer at The Rayen School and North and Kirkmere elementary schools.
* It also bought for $30,000 an occupied house at 1511 Parker St., which will be demolished to make way for construction of the new East Side High School. The roof replacements and the new high school will be paid for out of the $163.5 million available for school construction and renovation projects.
GIRARD
The board of education declared an emergency to bypass usual state procedures for bid advertisement. To hasten the opening of Girard Intermediate School, officials approved contracts to make needed repairs to bring the school up to acceptable air quality levels.
* The board approved a $32,650 contract with Patella Carpeting for carpet and vinyl composition and tile installation. A.A. Samuels also was awarded a $78,600 contract bid for mechanical ductwork removal and replacement. After opening last year, the new school was closed in May because of problems in the ventilation and heating system that caused pupil illnesses.
