YOUNGSTOWN -- The city school district will conduct a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Chaney High School auditorium to discuss construction of a new West Side elementary school. The school, part of the district's $163.5 million building project, was to be built near the current West Elementary School, which will be demolished. The school board now proposes building the school on property in Schenley Park.
Halloween safety
AUSTINTOWN -- Halloween safety will be the topic of a "Lights on Afterschool"program for pupils at Watson Elementary School, 215 Idaho Road, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the school. The event is part of an after-school program sponsored by the YWCA of Youngstown, which operates 11 such programs in Mahoning County. Thursday's observance is sponsored nationally by The Afterschool Alliance, a coalition seeking to ensure that all children will have quality after-school programs by the year 2010.
