PREP SOFTBALL Struthers nips Hubbard

HUBBARD -- Kristina Vecchione hit a sacrifice fly to score Tina George with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Struthers High defeated Hubbard 2-1 in a Division II softball tournament game Wednesday.
Struthers, the second seed, will take on top-seeded Poland in the district next Tuesday.
Holly Hickenbottom of Struthers (16-6) singled twice, including an RBI base hit in the first inning. Hubbard tied the score in the fifth.
In the seventh, Laura Berry singled for the Wildcats and Tina George was called on to pinch-run. Laura Bell had a sacrifice bunt to advance George to second. George went to third on an error and came in when Vecchione hit a fly ball to center.
Canfield 4, Mooney 0: CANFIELD -- Lindsay Gaudiose (11-5) pitched Canfield to the sectional title.
Gaudiose, who scattered three hits and struck out four, pitched her sixth shutout of the season.
The Cardinals (15-7) were paced by Nikkie Garrett, who hit a double and single and drove in a run.
Allison Morgan and Kelly Williams each hit two singles and scored once.
Conneaut 4, Lakeview 2: CONNEAUT -- Adrian Tuttle pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts for Conneaut.
Tuttle out-dueled Jessica Jurkovic, who threw a five-hitter with six strikeouts.
Jessica Olmstead had a triple and keyed the offensive attack, while Char Kudlock also contributed a triple for the winners.
Div. IV: MINERAL RIDGE -- Holly Mills singled three times while Sarah Gerberry had a single and a triple as Mineral Ridge beat Bloomfield 10-1 in a Div. IV tournament game.
Ashley Ault (16-2) threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and she singled twice for the Rams (16-2).
Allison Cottrell homered and Stacy Siroki doubled for Mineral Ridge.
Southington 4, Windham 2: WINDHAM -- Southington (15-3) made a first-inning four-run surge stand up. With one out, winning pitcher Lindsay Byer, Kristy Sabo, Jennifer Brunstetter, Melissa Smith and Katie Fiest hit successive singles to score runs.
Byer (8-2) scattered three hits and struck out eight.
Feist paced the Wildcats with two singles and she drove in two runs.
Regular season: CHAMPION -- Stephanie Weaver pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine as Champion defeated Newton Falls 3-2 in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Champion (18-2, 12-1 TAC) got the deciding run in the 10th inning as Jessica Rowland singled, stole second and, with one out, scored on a single by Molly Barnes.
Rowland led the Flashes with a double and three singles and she scored twice.
Christie Novotny hit a two-run double.
