LIBERTY -- Last week, Woodrow Wilson fighters went 4-0 in the opening session of the K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament at the old Liberty High Gymnasium.
Wednesday night, Campbell Memorial boxers posted a 6-0-1 record to highlight the 37-bout card.
Spearheading the Red Devils' strong showing was Albert Holland, a junior tailback with the Campbell Memorial football team and a two-year starter.
Holland came on strong in the last two rounds with a series of solid left hooks to win a decision over Terry Balensky of Sharpsville, in an upper-class junior middleweight bout.
"I just started training today, but I'm in good shape because I'm running track," said Holland.
Regarding his left hook, Holland said, "I just countered every time he threw a right."
Other winners: Also winning in the upper-class for Campbell were light heavyweight Tony Skillas and cruiserweight Jim Gigax, while the three Red Devils under-class winners were bantamweight Juan Vega, super middleweight Dan Stucky and light heavyweight Jose Mateo. Yianni Skoutelis earned a draw.
Skillas gained a decision over Travis Bond (Keystone), while Gigax's bout was stopped by the referee at 33 seconds of the first round over Salvatore Sunseri (Keystone).
Vega scored a decision over Carl Gruhlky (Poland), Stucky won by the referee stopping the contest at :35 of the second round over Anthony Horvath (Struthers), and Mateo (Campbell) won by decision over Larry McCoy (Greenville).
Koval unbeaten: There were a host of other outstanding fights in the upper-class, including Chris Koval's heavyweight decision over Blase Iorio (Sharpsville) that gave the Fitch entry his second win this year, and made him 14-0 in three years in the meet.
"I got a little wild in there," said Koval, who called Iorio "a tough kid with a good chin."
Also impressive was Greg Simcox, an all-state senior soccer player from Poland, who posted a decision over Ron Renwick of Greenville.
"I realize I have to work on a lot of things. But I feel that I landed some good shots, but I just didn't land enough," said Simcox.
Struthers middleweight Dave Rapone, a tailback-defensive end for the Wildcat football team, fought to a draw for the second consecutive week, against Eric Humphrey of Niles.
"I should be in very good shape because I lift and run every day," said Rapone.
Chris Mahinparvar of The Rayen School won a decision over Robert Tsai of Maplewood.
"I work hard. I run and jump rope every day. And my uncle, Lenzie Morgan, works with me," said Mahinparvar.
Twins triumph: In the under-class, twins Mark and Adam Grdinich, sophomore football players for Girard, both won.
Mark, a linebacker-running back, won when the referee stopped the contest in the first round over Tim Carter (LaBrae) in a junior middleweight bout.
Adam, an inside linebacker, won by decision over Aaron Mayne (Western Reserve) in a middleweight bout.
