Police look for suspects
BOARDMAN -- Vandals ransacked administrative offices throughout Boardman Center Middle School between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 5:55 a.m. Monday.
According to police reports, the school's custodial and maintenance staff discovered the damage when they arrived to open the school Monday morning.
Police say the vandals forced their way into the school at the entrance near the rear alcove and apparently spent a significant amount of time inside, breaking windows on locked doors to gain entry into offices, records and tool rooms on three floors.
Selected locked filing cabinets were pried open as were the coin boxes on four soda machines. Offices, cabinets and files were ransacked, but few items appear to be missing.
School officials are compiling a comprehensive list of damaged and missing items. Police collected a variety of evidence, including cigarette butts, a pop can and a master key.
Bus driver finds child
BOARDMAN -- An employee at the Boardman bus garage made an unscheduled stop around 7:10 p.m. Monday and discovered a child who had been locked in earlier that day.
According to police reports, the child got on bus 22 after school and was to be dropped off at Lads and Lassies Day Care, but she apparently fell asleep and was overlooked when the driver returned the bus to the locked parking area.
The child was returned to her grandmother who had been looking for her after another family member was notified by the day-care center that the child never arrived.
The Boardman Police Juvenile Division is investigating.
Caiazza Candy recall
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Caiazza Candy has recalled a 12-piece assortment box because of a labeling error.
Felicia Caiazza, vice president, said the New Castle-based candy manufacturer voluntarily put out the recall after U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspection found that dried egg yolk was not listed on the package as an ingredient for a buttercream candy that is in the 12-piece box. The boxes were mainly sold in the spring in the tri-state area, she said.
The candy manufacturer isn't sure how many boxes were sold. The 5-ounce box has a clear lid and Caiazza Candy written on it. Anyone with the candy can take it back to the store where it was purchased for a refund, she said. Caiazza said the candy manufacturer ships out few boxes over the warm weather months and most of the candy was still in the company's warehouse when the FDA found the error. Those boxes have been relabeled, she said.
Fire damages home
AUSTINTOWN -- A fire caused $8,000 in damage to a rented house at 105 S. S. Inglewood Drive at 3:30 p.m. Monday, according to the township fire department.
Neighbors put out most of the fire before firefighters arrived. The blaze was caused by a malfunction in an electrical cord.
Firefighters said they found suspected drugs in a basement bedroom and notified police, who confiscated half a gram of marijuana and a pipe with marijuana.
The female occupant of the house told police a man occupied the room. Police were trying to contact him.
