Harding's Claretthonored
WARREN -- Warren Harding senior running back Maurice Clarett has been named the Steel Valley Conference's player of the week following his performance in the Raiders' 43-28 victory over Boardman.
Clarett carried 17 times for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns to pace the state's top-ranked Division I team.
Miller, Horneyrecord aces
YOUNGSTOWN -- Boardman residents Aaron Miller and Steve Horney recently recorded holes-in-one at Mill Creek Park Golf Course.
Miller used a 7-iron to ace the No. 16 hole on the North Course. Bob Kanos was the witness.
Horney used a 7-wood to ace the 133-yard, No. 8 hole on the North Course. Witnesses were Bill Campy, Jim Byrd and Jim Ocarz.
City Serieshonors Dykes
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chaney High School's Keilen Dykes has been named the City Series player of the week.
The 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior tight end/defensive end graded 89 percent on offense with one reception and a two-point conversion catch in the Cowboys' 27-10 victory over Mooney. He also had six tackles, five assists, two tackles for loss and a sack on defense.
Kaercher acesat Candywood
VIENNA -- Dave Kaercher of Niles scored a hole-in-one at Candywood Golf Course.
Kaercher aced the 170-yard, No. 14 hole using a 5-wood and was in the group that included Jim Paul, Butch Rhodes and Ron Stevens.
Rifken namedNY-Penn MVP
NILES -- Staten Island first baseman Aaron Rifken was named the Most Valuable Player in the New York Penn League, which announced its 16-player all-star team Monday.
The Staten Island Yankees and the Williamsport Crosscutters each placed four members on the all-star team. No members of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers made the honor squad.
Rifken was second in the league in RBIs, slugging percentage and extra-base hits, third in triples and fourth in batting and hits.
Herubin runsin Chicago
CHICAGO -- Bazetta Township's Karen Herubin, 28, a graduate of Champion High, finished 1,036th in the Chicago Marathon in 4 hours, 18 minutes.
It was Herubin's first marathon run.

LAKE MILTON -- A Columbiana woman and Lake Milton man recently scored holes-in-one at Lakeside Golf Course.
Marianne Lydenn used her 7-wood to ace the 110-yard No. 18 hole. Witnesses were Mary Jane Beights and Chuck Beights.
Frank Tomaino used a 7-iron to ace the 120-yard No. 18 hole. Witnesses were Sam Lanza, Russ Adair and Doug Wack.

HOUSTON -- Astros rookie Roy Oswalt (14-3) threw 70 pitches in a simulated game to test his strained right groin and could be ready to start Game 4 of his team's first-round playoff series against Atlanta.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies fired hitting coach Richie Hebner, while keeping five other coaches for the 2002 season. Greg Gross, manager Larry Bowa's bench coach, replaces Hebner. The team will hire a new bench coach.
The Phillies tied for ninth in the National League in team batting average.
Kell rescued
SWIFTON, Ark. -- Hall of Famer George Kell was rescued by a firefighter from his burning home. The 79-year-old Kell, who played third base for the Detroit Tigers, was not injured but his home was destroyed.

Ballesterosadded to field
VIRGINIA WATER, England -- Seve Ballesteros, who has not won since 1995 and missed the cut in all but two tournaments this year, was added to the 12-man field for the World Match Play Championship.
Ballesteros will play Mike Weir of Canada in the first round Thursday at Wentworth. Ballesteros will be making his 20th appearance in the World Match Play.
