VFW seeks nominations
The Ohio VFW is seeking nominations for its National Citizenship Education Teacher Award, a program that recognizes educators in elementary, junior high and senior high schools who instill a sense of national pride in pupils, promote civic responsibility, teach flag etiquette and patriotism, plan field trips to city hall, organize community volunteer projects, invite veterans into the classroom, and foster democracy through special projects. Free evaluations, shots
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Mobile Outreach Team of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Butler, Pa., will offer free health evaluations and flu shots to veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at American Legion Post 343, New Castle, and Oct. 23 at American Legion Post 299, Sharon, Pa. Veterans are asked to bring their discharge papers.
HONORS
Army awards medals
Area men serving in the Army received medals. They include:
* Staff Sgt. Joseph M. Grumney received his second award of the Commendation Medal. He is a section sergeant assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 41st Engineer Battalion at Fort Drum, Watertown, N.Y. Grumney is a son of Raymond G. and Virginia A. Grumney, 5347 Pritchard-Olhtown Road, Newton Falls, and is a 1982 graduate of Jackson Milton High School, North Jackson.
* Spec. Adam W. Milliren received the Commendation Medal while assigned as a tank driver with Bravo Troop, 1st Battalion, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Irwin, Calif. He is a son of Bonnie L. Walters and grandson of Margaret E. Tarcy, both of 833 Spruce Ave., Sharon, Pa.
* Staff Sgt. Emmett Carlisle received the Commendation Medal while serving as a platoon sergeant for the 94th Engineer Battalion, Hohenfels, Germany. He is a brother of Ann Carlisle, 433 Lansing Ave., Youngstown, and Andrew H. Carlisle, Lincoln Avenue, Hubbard, and is a 1978 graduate of East High School, Youngstown.
* Spec. Michael J. Rodriguez was decorated with the Achievement Medal while assigned as a combat engineer with Charlie Company, 65th Engineer Battalion, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He is a son of Deborah and Jeffery Scullen, 187 Gordon Ave., Campbell, and is a 1998 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School.
BASIC GRADS
Completed training
Several area residents completed basic military training. They include:
* Army: National Guard Pvt. Phillip A. Brinker, a son of Mark Brinker, 234 Amsterdam Road, Grove City, Pa.; Reserve Pvt. Thomas L. Van Epps Jr. (Greenville High School '01), a son of Thomas Van Epps, 96 Gibson Road, Greenville, Pa.; Reserve Pvt. Alicia L. Felger (Beaver Local High School, Lisbon '00), a granddaughter of Kenny Walker, 16851 Canton Ave., East Liverpool; Pvt. Mathew T. Richards, who sister, Melissa Pazzoulo, resides in Austintown.
* Marine Corps: Pfc. Michael Czombos (Austintown Fitch High School), a son of Paul and Debi Czombos, Austintown. After basic training, Czombos attended Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Okla.
TRAINING
Graduates
Several area residents completed advanced military training. They include:
* Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ernest W. Jones graduated from the six-week Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. Jones was named a distinguished graduate for being in the top 10 percent of the class in both academics and leadership. He is a ground radio communications supervisor assigned to the 726th Air Control Squadron, Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. Jones is a son of Grace A. Jones, Summit Lane, East Liverpool, and is a 1982 graduate of Beaver Local High School, Lisbon. His wife, Lisa, is a daughter of James C. Brant and Nancy Farinacci, Vine Street, East Liverpool.
* Army Sgt. Charles E. Pace Jr. graduated from traffic management coordinator advanced individual training (AIT) course at Fort Eustis, Va. Pace is a son of Charles E. and Anita K. Pace, 255 Stewart St., Warren, and is a 1989 graduate of Champion High School.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Christopher L. Gentile graduated from the C-130 aircraft maintenance mission-ready airman technician (MRT) course, Little Rock Air Force, Ark. The course included 88 days of pre-training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, and 20 days of hands-on-training at Little Rock Air Force Base. Gentile is a C-130 crew chief with the 41st Airlift Squadron at Pope Air Force Base, Fayetteville, N.C. He is a son of Betty J. and Raymond Gentile, 474 McClure Ave., Sharon, Pa., and a 1995 graduate of Sharon Junior-Senior High School.
