Race for the Cure
CLEVELAND -- The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Northeast Ohio affiliate rescheduled the survivor's ceremony and other activities associated with the Komen Race for the Cure for Oct. 28 at Wade Oval in University Circle. The 1-mile fun walk and 5K race/walk are canceled. Activities will be from 8 to 11 a.m. with the survivor's ceremony at 9:15 a.m. In this area, pre-registered race participants can pick up their race T-shirts from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Southern Park Mall in Boardman.
Prostate cancer study
PITTSBURGH -- Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute are looking for men 55 and older to participate in the largest prostate cancer prevention study ever conducted in the country. The study will include more than 32,000 men and will take 12 years.
The National Cancer Institute will examine if vitamin E and selenium can prevent prostate cancer, said Dr. Donald Trump, the study's lead investigator. Individuals who have had prostate or other forms of cancer are not eligible. Call (800) 237-4724 for information.
Center for baby sitters
WASHINGTON -- The Council on Family Health is offering a free Babysitter Center, a magnetized dry-erase poster, with basic first aid tips and spaces to write emergency telephone numbers. Single copies are available free to households by sending a self-addressed, 80-cents stamped, 9" by 12" envelope to: Council on Family Health, Babysitter Center, PMB 422, 1155 Connecticut Ave. N.W., Suite 400, Washington, D.C. 20036. Groups may received up to 20 copies at no charge, providing they mail their request on their organization's letterhead. Additional copies are available at for $1 each.
ALS fund-raising walk
PARMA -- The ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Association Northeast Ohio Chapter's annual Walk To D'Feet ALS will begin at 9 a.m. Oct. 21 on Cuyahoga Community College Western Campus. There is no entry fee for the event, which is open to the public, but walkers are asked to collect pledges to benefit ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. NILES -- The Eastwood Mall has several activities during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They include selling Rosie, the I Care Bear for a $10 donation at the customer service desk. Near the customer service area will be a survivor wall where people can sign their name to show support.
Arthritis self-help
AUSTINTOWN -- A six-week program to teach people with arthritis how to take a more active role in their health care is offered by Anthem Senior Advantage and Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. The self-help class will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays from Oct. 16 to Nov. 20 at Austinwoods Rehabilitation Center, 4780 Kirk Road. The fee is $25.
