GIRARD Board ready to consider bids for work on middle school

Bids will be presented for installing vinyl tile and replacing HVAC duct work.
GIRARD -- Based on successful testing of a model room in the closed Intermediate School, the board of education will consider bids for improvements to the school when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Prospect School cafeteria.
Fulton & amp; Associates, a Wickliffe engineering firm, conducted tests last week and confirmed that all airflow requirements have been met, said Joseph Shoaf, schools superintendent.
Standards met: The company reported Friday that the model room meets American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers standards.
"The next step is for the board to approve the low bids that have been received to complete the building according to the conditions we created in the test room," Shoaf said.
The bids to be presented Tuesday will cover costs of installing vinyl tile, removing all lined HVAC duct work and replacing it with unlined ducts and completing the installation of the fire suppression system in the Intermediate School.
Timothy Thomas of Ricciuti Balog & amp; Associates, the architectural firm that designed the new Intermediate School, will be at the meeting to present the bids.
Health problems: The Intermediate School, which first opened at the beginning of last school year, closed May 1 after pupils and staff complained of headaches, vomiting, rashes, dizziness, respiratory problems and lethargy.
The ailments were traced to the heating and ventilation system, and the building has been closed ever since. School officials have said it won't reopen until they're satisfied it's safe.
