LOCAL TV Steelers fans unhappy about getting shut out
The NFL has ordered Channel 27 to telecast Browns games when both teams are playing.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Normally, Roland Adeszko, the general manager for WKBN Channel 27, is pleased that his station carries the majority of Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers games.
Then there are the Sundays when the Browns and Steelers play at the same time, and Channel 27 can only show one team.
Because the NFL considers the Mahoning Valley to be a Browns market, Channel 27 has no choice but to show Browns games when conflicts arise.
And that doesn't please Mahoning County Steelers fans who get shut out of Pittsburgh telecasts because cable systems don't offer Pittsburgh's KDKA Channel 2.
This week: Sunday at 1 p.m., the Browns (2-1) will play the San Diego Chargers (3-0) at Cleveland Browns Stadium while the Steelers (1-1) will open Heinz Field against the Cincinnati Bengals (2-1).
Channel 27 will show the Chargers-Browns game, as will Cleveland's CBS affiliate WOIO Channel 19.
KDKA will show the Bengals-Steelers game.
Adeszko says that even though his market is midway between two NFL cities, he can't pick games.
"Unlike Cleveland stations, which are a primary affiliate to the NFL, we are a secondary market as defined by the NFL," Adeszko said.
"In addition, we are designated as a secondary for two, not one, teams because we are equidistant between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
"Therefore, the NFL, not CBS, dictates which game we will air based on a whole slew of reasons from sellout levels, opponents of both teams, which conference the visitors are from, etc."
Adeszko says that unless there are unusual circumstances, the NFL will order Browns games shown here.
This year, seven Steelers games televised by CBS won't be shown by Channel 27. The first was Sept. 9 when the Steelers played in Jacksonville while the Browns opened against the Seattle Seahawks.
The other five Steelers dates and games not on Channel 27 are: Oct. 14, Kansas City; Oct. 21, at Tampa Bay; Nov. 4, Baltimore; Nov. 25, at Tennessee; and Dec. 30, at Cincinnati.
