Pupil charged
SALEM -- A Perry Township girl is charged in Columbiana County Juvenile Court after authorities said she threatened to bring a gun to Prospect Elementary School and shoot someone.
The 12-year-old sixth-grader made the threat in class Sept. 28, after which the school removed her and called police. It's unclear what prompted the utterance. Police determined the girl had no firearm, nor access to one.
She was charged Thursday by Salem police with a juvenile offense of inducing panic. Aside from a court-imposed punishment, she also could be disciplined by the school district, authorities said.

State tax dollars
SALEM -- Several elected officials from Columbiana County spoke to an Ohio House committee in Columbus recently to support a bill that would change how state tax dollars known as local government funds are distributed through counties to cities, villages and townships. The group spoke in favor of House Bill 329, introduced by state Rep. Charles Blasdel of East Liverpool, R-3rd. If passed, the measure would strip East Liverpool of its veto power over the annual distribution formula. Some communities have argued that East Liverpool has used its veto to grab an unfair share of the county's local government money. This year, the city's getting nearly 27 percent of the county's $5.2 million LGF allocation.
