MERCER COUNTY Common Pleas Judge Dobson sets prison sentences for six



The judge sentenced five of the six to prison time.
MERCER, Pa. -- A parole violator who pulled a gun on a policeman while being arrested was sentenced Wednesday by Common Pleas Court Judge Thomas Dobson to one to three years in prison.
Maurice Cooper, 23, formerly of Farrell, was arrested last March at a home in the 400 block of French Street in Farrell, where police were seeking another man. Police found marijuana, cocaine and a pager in Cooper's possession, all in violation of his parole provisions. During a struggle with a state agent and a police officer, Cooper pulled a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic pistol from under his clothes. Possession of the firearm was an additional parole violation.
Revoked: Probation was revoked on his 1999 sentence of up to one year in jail followed by one year of probation on misdemeanor charges of carrying firearms without a license and possession of Valium. He was given credit for time already served.
Michael Kirchell, 37, of RD 2 Box 227D, Volant, was given one to five years in prison for a February burglary at the VFW Social Club, 1470 Brent Road, Springfield Township.
Judge Dobson ordered Kirchell to make restitution for damaging two televisions, two windows, two doors, several machines and a pool table and taking a beer tap. The club's loss was nearly $5,000.
Also sentenced Wednesday were:
UMonica Austin, 25, of 326 Wallis Ave., Farrell, three to 18 months in the county jail for selling 2.2 grams of cocaine to a state agent for $300 last October. She was also ordered to make $390 restitution.
URobert Crawford, 18, of 390 Quinby St., Sharon, 30 months' probation, ordered to pay $15 restitution and given credit for 30 days served for helping a 17-year-old juvenile steal a wallet last March from a man in the parking lot of the Shenango Valley Mall, East State Street, Hermitage. Crawford punched the victim in the face.
UJohn King Jr., 39, of Pittsburgh, sentenced to 90 days in the county jail and fined $1,000 for driving under the influence. He was placed on one year's probation for possessing OxyContin tablets and six months' probation for possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested along Interstate 79 in Findley Township on Jan. 24.
UJames Vaughn, 38, formerly of Wheatland, was sentenced to nine to 24 months in prison for a failing to report to his place of employment while on work release last March from the Mercer County Jail where he was serving a sentence for disorderly conduct. Vaughn was later located at the Last Lap Bar in Wheatland Borough.
