Boy hit by car is OK
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-month-old boy hit by a car at about 8 p.m. Wednesday suffered only scrapes, police said. The child had been playing outside his Dogwood Lane home in Rockford Village when a neighbor backing out of her driveway struck him, according to police reports.
Checks forged
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone forged several checks from the account of Carrington South Rehabilitation Health Care Center on Midlothian Boulevard. An administrator at the center discovered that eight bogus checks, totaling about $6,300 and dated Sept. 14, had cleared through the center's bank account. The administrator's signature had been forged. Six of the checks had been written to a 26-year-old woman who was employed at the Illinois Manor, Covington House and Bryson Manor centers in Youngstown, police documents show.
Gunshots reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A tenant of Valley View apartments on Tyrell Street told police gunshots were heard in a neighboring apartment between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday. The neighbor said she heard three or four men yelling and heard four or five shots fired. Police responding found the door to the apartment kicked in and a television and window had been shot.
Homes available to rent
CAMPBELL -- Seventeen factory homes have been renovated and are ready to rent on the west side of Jackson Avenue. The homes, built from 1918 to 1920 for Youngstown Sheet & amp; Tube workers, rent for $296 a month. Mayor John Dill said the housing will help revitalize the area by attracting working-class families and by bringing in property and income taxes.
Team volunteer quits
AUSTINTOWN -- A member of the Fitch High School football team's support staff stopped volunteering with the team after he was accused of trying to punch a player, police say. Police said the mother of the player, 17, does not wish to pursue charges. The teen told police in late September that the support staff member accused him of fumbling too much in practice. The staffer tried to punch him twice, the teen said, but he blocked both punches before other football players stepped in and stopped the conflict.
Man faces charges
COITSVILLE -- A 54-year-old Niles man was arrested on charges of aggravated menacing and carrying a concealed weapon as a result of what police are calling a fit of road rage around 6 p.m. Tuesday near the Pennsylvania-Ohio border. Police said the man was driving on Pa. Route 208 toward Ohio when an 18-year-old Hubbard man attempted to pass him. The 18-year-old told police the Niles man wouldn't let him pass, flashed a gun out the window as they entered Ohio, then motioned with the gun to pull over. Police found the Niles man and pulled him over. They said they found a loaded handgun and an open beer container in the vehicle. The man is being held without bond in the Mahoning County Jail pending an appearance in Campbell Municipal Court.
Woman robbed
CAMPBELL -- A 42-year-old Campbell woman was robbed by two men after she pulled into the driveway of her Third Street home at 3:15 a.m. today. One man pointed a gun at her as she left her vehicle. She threw her purse over a fence. Police said the men found the purse and ran toward Second Street, but the woman chased them in her vehicle, saw them get into their own vehicle and got a license number. Police said the men abandoned the vehicle at Fourth Street, taking the woman's credit cards, $40 and a watch.
Break-in at home
BOARDMAN -- A Paxton Road couple awoke early today to find two men standing in their home. Police said the woman heard a loud noise at the front door around 12:30 a.m. She called police while her husband went to investigate. There was a very tall man standing in the living room of the house and another man in the doorway. The woman's husband yelled at the men, who ran out.
Identity theft
AUSTINTOWN -- A North Edgehill Avenue man told police Tuesday that a woman charged $1,511 in cellular phone calls without his permission. The cell phone company told the man that the woman opened three cell phone accounts using his Social Security number in July.
