WARREN -- David Baudo is resigning as head of the Trumbull County Building Inspection Department.
County commissioners were expected to approve Baudo's departure at a meeting this morning.
"It is voluntary, and it is also a surprise," said Commissioner Michael O'Brien.
In recent weeks, Baudo has been called in to discuss with commissioners personnel problems in his nine-person department.
"We have had problems in the past over there, and hopefully we will get to the bottom before the new person gets on board," said Commissioner Joseph J. Angelo Jr.
"I don't think there is a problem with the department," he added. "We have had some irregularities in the past, and sometimes you have difficulties with people when they are trying to accomplish a single goal."
O'Brien said problems in the department were "nothing extraordinary -- superviser-subordinate issues," O'Brien said. "The work they do is good work."
Neither commissioner would be more specific.
Background: In 1989, Baudo took over a department that had been under state scrutiny for its record keeping, plans examination and on-site inspections.
The department conducts electrical and structural building inspections of residential and commercial construction in most areas of Trumbull County.
"Everything is fine here," Baudo said.
Baudo, 58, was previously chief building official for Warren.
He earns $54,701 a year.
A registered architect, Baudo also develops plans for cellular towers. He said he will continue with that work after his last day, Oct. 12.
"I do a lot of stuff," he said.
Commissioners are expected to name an interim department head.
