PREP VOLLEYBALL Canfield stays alive in MAC race



The Cardinals defeated Poland to improve to 5-2 in the conference.
CANFIELD -- Jill Vertanen made 18 kills, scored six points and made five blocks as the Canfield High volleyball team defeated Poland Tuesday to remain alive in the Metro Athletic Conference race.
Vanessa Schutz had nine kills and eight digs as Canfield displayed a strong team effort in avenging an earlier loss to Poland by scores of 15-9, 9-15, 15-5.
Stephanie Bellish scored 10 points and 15 assists for Canfield (9-7, 5-2).
For Poland (10-8, 5-2), Kari Bell had 12 kills, eight points and seven digs. Erin Mulligan had eight kills, 11 assists and seven digs while Steffi Graf had eight kills, two points and eight digs.
Poland and Canfield trail MAC leader Salem by two games. Both have rematches with the Quakers.
Salem 15-15, Howland 1-0: SALEM -- Kelli Crouse had four aces and three kills as Salem remained unbeaten in the MAC.
Taylor Hendricks had two aces and four kills for Salem (12-7, 7-0).
Jaime Kelly had one point and two kills for Howland (6-8).
Niles 15-15, Struthers 9-6: NILES -- Amelia Bradley had eight points and three aces and Danelle Durig had seven points, five kills and three aces for Niles.
JoAnn Johnson had six blocks, Michelle Rhodes had 10 assists and Nicky Trautman had three digs for Niles (8-10, 2-4 MAC).
Sarah Sepesy had six kills. Stephanie Muntean had seven assists and Tiffany Roberolt had six digs for Struthers (5-9, 0-6).
Chaney 15-12-15, Campbell 12-15-13: YOUNGSTOWN -- Nicole Italiano had 14 kills, six digs and three blocks while Angela Armstrong had 13 points and 12 assists for Chaney.
For Campbell, Candace Hrelec had 17 points and Anna Zembillas had six kills and five blocks.
Chaney 15-10-15, Rayen 5-15-12: YOUNGSTOWN -- Amy Wooler had 12 points and five digs and Jill Kocanyar had five points, four aces, five kills and five digs for Chaney (9-9).
Cherrell Triplett had 10 points for Rayen.
Fitch 15-15, Mooney 1-0: YOUNGSTOWN -- Fitch's Maggie Case had seven kills in a Steel Valley Conference win over Mooney.
Ashlee Lemke had five points and Stacie Mang had 12 assists for Fitch (12-3). Fitch is rated the eight-best team in this week's Associated Press poll of Ohio's Division I teams.
For Mooney (2-11, 1-5), Jenna Polkovitch had seven digs and Jaylene Juylitto had eight assists.
Canton South 18-15, West Branch 16: Molly New scored nine points while Taylor Woods scored five for the Warriors.
