MAHONING COUNTY Cancer Society honors 3
Various fund-raising events have brought in more than $770,000 in donations.
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning County Unit of the American Cancer Society presented awards Tuesday to Dan Pompeii, Terry O'Halloran, Dr. Nancy Gantt and Nancy Felton at its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at the Holiday Inn here.
Pompeii, 28, of Canfield, received the Courage Award. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January and since then has had surgeries, chemotherapy and various medicines, and is scheduled for another surgery by the end of the year.
O'Halloran, of Boardman, received the Man of the Year Award. He is a member of the ACS Mahoning Unit board of directors and has been chairman of the ACS Swim-Along event for 17 years.
Dr. Gantt of Boardman was selected as Woman of the Year. A member of the board of directors, she also is a member of the Pink Ribbon Gala Committee and involved in various cancer control activities such as Reach to Recovery and the Navigator Plus Program.
Felton, of Canfield, is Volunteer of the Year. She is co-chairman of the Tri-County Ladies Golf Classic, volunteers at the Austintown and Boardman Relays for Life and the Tri-County Golf Classic, and donates hundreds of hours during the year as an ACS office volunteer.
More action: Other announcements during the luncheon were:
UMichele Ewing, volunteer communications chairwoman of the Mahoning Unit, also is serving as volunteer chairman of the newly formed Ohio Division ACS statewide communications program team.
UDuring the last year, the Mahoning Unit received two awards from the Ohio Division ACS, one for best press coverage during the Great American Smokeout in November 2000; and the other for the most creative colorectal program, Eat, Drink and Be Healthy, in March 2001.
UWFMJ-TV will receive the Mahoning County Unit's first Media Partnership Award at the Oct. 20 Ohio Division annual meeting.
UThe Mahoning Unit received $770,416 in donations from Sept. 1, 2000, to Aug. 31, 2001, from various fund-raising events.
Mahoning Unit officers for the 2001-02 fiscal year are Dr. William Begalla, president; Dr. Robert DeMarco, vice president; Amy Noll, secretary; Philip Kocon, treasurer; Dr. Karl Wieneke, medical adviser; and Joseph Petrolla, past president.
