LIBERTY -- Liberty police will donate nine cellular phones Friday to Someplace Safe, Trumbull County's domestic violence agency in Warren.
Police Chief Anthony Slifka said the used phones have been replaced within the department and will be programmed to dial 911.
The phones will be used by Someplace Safe clients who don't have access to a home phone or fear violence while away from home.
Woman robbed
WARREN -- A 19-year-old McKinley N.E. woman told police she was robbed at gunpoint early today.
The woman said she was at a stop sign at Laird and McKinley around 2 a.m. when a man approached and demanded her purse.
A truck driver for Browning-Ferris Industries found the woman's wallet and cellular telephone a few hours later at DeForest and Pine Street.
Ohio justice to speakat area high school
WARREN -- Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton will visit Harding High School Friday morning to address 100-150 students in the international baccalaureate program and senior government and legal classes about law and government.
Justice Stratton served as a Franklin County Common Pleas Court judge for seven years and was the first woman elected to that bench. She was born in Bangkok, Thailand, to American missionaries and is a graduate of Ohio State University law school.
She is in town as keynote speaker for the 21st annual probate court practice seminar at Leo's Ristorante in Howland. Everlasting Hope, a musical ensemble from First Assembly of God Church in Warren, will sing a medley of patriotic songs to open the seminar.
Marijuana plantsfound in garage
WARREN -- Warren Township police confiscated 207 marijuana plants from a building at 1956 South Main Street
Police Chief Thomas Rush and Lt. Don Bishop said they found the plants in a garage around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday. Bishop noted the building is owned by the Outlaws Motorcycle Club.
No arrests have been made.
He said a spokesman for the Outlaws said club members did not know the plants were in the garage.
Township police and the Trumbull County Sheriff's Department are investigating.
Apple Butter Festivalscheduled for Saturday
YOUNGSTOWN -- Park Vista Retirement Community, 1216 Fifth Ave., will have its 29th Apple Butter Festival from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The Frank Tonelli Band will be featured, along with the Castle Cloggers, who will perform from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
Park Vista's hand-stirred apple butter will be made in a large kettle over an open fire and will be available for sale.
Also available will be apple cider, popcorn, hot apple dumplings, ice cream and hot dogs.
There will be hay rides, pony rides, Grotto clowns, face and pumpkin painting and craft sales.
"United We Stand" T-shirts will be available for children and adults.
All proceeds from the shirts, designed by a Park Vista employee, will go to the New York Firemen's Relief Fund.
In case of inclement weather, the festival will be indoors.
Gun threat reported
COLUMBIANA -- A 15-year-old Columbiana High School student is being treated at an undisclosed facility after threatening to bring a gun to the school Monday.
"Some people heard of the boy's plans and called us," Police Chief John Krawchyk said. "This was worth taking seriously. It was no joke. He admitted it."
Krawchyk said the boy did not make specific threats toward any individuals and at no time was anyone at risk.
No weapons were brought to the school or onto school property, he said.
Krawchyk said the department will await the treatment facility's report.
Robbery reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 27-year-old Boardman woman told police she was robbed at gunpoint by two boys as she got into her car after picking up food at the Dragon Palace at 3501 South Ave.
The woman said a boy between 11 and 16 grabbed her car door about 7 p.m. Tuesday, pointed a gun at her head and demanded her purse.
She gave him her purse and he fled with another boy in the same age range after stealing a bicycle from a third boy.
