CANFIELD -- From the beginning of the pre-game festivities, one could foresee a battle waiting to begin.
It was Senior Night for the Canfield High girls soccer team, not to mention that Metro Athletic Conference rival Poland was in town Wednesday.
Canfield capitalized on its chances and outscored Poland 2-1 in a contest that was fast-paced throughout.
"Our goal tonight was to go out and play as hard as we possibly could," Canfield coach Jon Ulicney said. "We judged our success tonight on whether we gave 100 percent effort. It turned out that doing that gave us the victory."
Abby Ferko needed no introduction for her encore to Senior Night.
One of the nine seniors, Ferko scored both of Canfield's goals to lead the win.
Carrera sparkles
"Senior Noelle Zalac, who usually mans the goal, played in the field tonight," Ulicney explained. "In her place we started sophomore Callie Carrera. She overcame being thrown into a big game for us and played outstanding."
Carrera, who finished with 14 saves, said, "Yeah, I was a little nervous at first. I really wanted to go out there and beat Poland. It was a great win for the team."
The tri-captain Zalac supported the position change.
"The switch was made to better the team and I have no problem with that," Zalac said. "Callie played amazing tonight."
Ferko strikes
Ferko sparked the Cardinals to an early 1-0 lead by finding the back of the net seven minutes into the first half.
She struck again in the second half with about 22 minutes left. She scored off an assist from Kelly Williams that was deflected by the Poland goalkeeper.
"I could care less who scores the goals as long as we win," said Ferko. "I was real happy to be in the right place when Kelly attempted the shot."
The Bulldogs cut into the Cardinal advantage when Brit Davis scored late in the second half. However, that was as close as Poland came to victory.
"This really made our Senior Night," Williams said. "We beat Poland at their place, but to win at home was awesome. The team was really looking forward to this match-up."
Grazia Sorice added, "You couldn't ask for a better Senior Night. This was incredible."
Canfield will face Howland next week for an opportunity to win the MAC.
