YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County deputy sheriffs took part today in a statewide roundup of parents who are delinquent in paying court-ordered child support.
Mahoning is one of 27 counties in Ohio participating at the request of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. This is the fifth such roundup since 1997. Since then, more than 600 arrests have been made in the state.
By this morning, there had been 14 arrests.
Police donate phones
LIBERTY -- Liberty police will donate nine cellular phones Friday to Someplace Safe, Trumbull County's domestic violence agency in Warren.
Police Chief Anthony Slifka said the used phones have been replaced within the department and will be programmed to dial 911.
The phones will be used by Someplace Safe clients who don't have access to a home phone or fear violence while away from home.
Festival scheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- Park Vista Retirement Community, 1216 Fifth Ave., will have its 29th Apple Butter Festival from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The Frank Tonelli Band will be featured, along with the Castle Cloggers, who will perform from 1 to 1:30 p.m.
Park Vista's hand-stirred apple butter will be made in a large kettle over an open fire and will be available for sale. Also available will be apple cider, popcorn, hot apple dumplings, ice cream and hot dogs. There will be hay rides, pony rides, Grotto clowns, face and pumpkin painting and craft sales.
"United We Stand" T-shirts will be available for all ages. All proceeds from the shirts, designed by a Park Vista employee, will go to the New York Firemen's Relief Fund.
Robbery reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 27-year-old Boardman woman told police she was robbed at gunpoint by two boys as she got into her car after picking up food at the Dragon Palace at 3501 South Ave.
The woman said a boy between 11 and 16 grabbed her car door about 7 p.m. Tuesday, pointed a gun at her head and demanded her purse. She gave him her purse and he fled with another boy in the same age range after stealing a bicycle from a third boy.
Forgery warrant issued
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police arrested a 24-year-old Forest Glen Avenue man about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging five counts of forgery.
Alfie Sloane is accused of writing five checks to himself from another person's personal account. The amount of the checks, dated July 2 and July 4, totaled $3,600.
Drugs found in cruiser
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 30-year-old Lakewood Avenue woman was charged with trafficking in drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia after police found suspected crack cocaine in a cruiser in which she had been transported to the Mahoning County Justice Center.
The woman had been arrested at about 7 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Oak Hill and Marion avenues on suspicion of loitering for the purpose of prostitution.
Police arrest woman
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 27-year-old West Glenaven Avenue woman was arrested and charged with trafficking in crack cocaine after police said they watched a man purchase a $20 rock from her at about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, as she sat parked in her car in a driveway near her address in the 100 block of the street.
Weapon charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old Sherwood Avenue boy was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon after police discovered a loaded revolver in his waistband while executing a search warrant at a West Dewey Avenue home.
Police discovered the teen at about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the rear yard of the home after forcibly entering the home when no one answered the door.
President named
YOUNGSTOWN -- Downtown's redevelopment agency board has a new president after nearly five years. Richard Pavlock, the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp.'s vice president, was selected CIC president Tuesday during the agency's reorganization meeting.
He replaces Charles Sammarone, city council president, who has been CIC president since February 1997. Sammarone said it was time for somebody else to lead the board. He remains a board member.
Pavlock is senior vice president for property management at Home Savings and Loan Co.
City Councilman Artis Gillam Sr., D-1st, is the new CIC vice president. Patricia Syak, executive director of Youngstown Symphony Society, remains the board secretary. Richard J. Schiraldi of Cohen & amp; Company Inc. remains treasurer.
