Dairy cattle electrocuted after dump truck snaps power line
Each cow was worth $1,800, according to the sheriff's report.
MESOPOTAMIA -- Several dairy cattle were electrocuted when a power line broke, sending voltage through the ground and into their barn.
The Trumbull County Sheriff's Department reported that five cows were killed Monday afternoon at Miles Farmers, 9650 state Route 534, when a dump truck hit the line, bringing it down.
Each cow was worth about $1,800, according to the report.
Some 60 cows were in the barn, the farm operators told deputies.
Tim Culver of Warren told deputies he was dumping gravel from the truck onto the driveway. He said a corner of the raised truck bed caught the wire.
"By the time the power was stopped, they say five cows died," Culver said in his statement. "The man that owns the property and I went to the barn. He screamed his cows died and I looked at them and I screamed and was walking around."
The Mesopotamia Fire Department and the sheriff's department were called to the scene.
No charges have been filed.
Sheriff department officials said they took reports for insurance purposes.
