LEETONIA -- Although production at General Extrusions Inc. in the industrial park here isn't scheduled to begin until December, the plant now has running water.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips said installation of two new 12-inch waterlines, including one to the Columbiana County Port Authority's World Trade Park, are connected and operating. GEI is the park's first tenant.
"We're about done with construction, at least until spring," Phillips said. "We aren't going to be doing anything else this year big enough for residents to notice. We're going to give them a little break."
Grants: He said the village has received Community Development Block Grants and a grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation for separate projects that will begin in the spring.
A $59,900 CDBG will be used to replace aging fire hydrants on the north side.
A $129,790 CDBG will be used to install a 12-inch waterline from Main Street to the water plant on St. Peter Street.
Sidewalks will be installed on Washington Street from the corner of Washington and Pine streets to Main Street.
ODOT approved a grant of $110,000 for the entire sidewalk project. Washingtonville and Leetonia contributed the balance, about $45,000.
Boiling order: With work on the waterlines and water storage facility completed, Phillips said an order for residents to boil drinking water can be lifted in a few days.
"We're waiting on the results of our bacteria testing," Phillips said. "We don't anticipate any problems with that."
Besides contractors installing the new waterlines, village crews drained the village's 480,000-gallon concrete reservoir to install new pipes and a new pumping system. The reservoir is now full, but officials can't lift the boil order until the test results are known, Phillips explained.
