HIGH STAKES Reading tests

The Ohio Fourth-Grade Guarantee kicks in this school year:
Ohio's approximately 130,000 fourth-graders are taking a state reading proficiency test this week.
Pupils will place in one of four categories: advanced, proficient, basic and below basic.
Pupils scoring below basic will have two more chances, in March and July, to pass the tests again.
If a pupil fails all three attempts, school districts have three options: retain the pupil in fourth grade; promote the pupil to fifth grade with the permission of the reading teacher and principal; promote the pupil to fifth grade but with special intensive intervention.
