Canfield boys clinch tie for MAC championship
Niles beat Poland and Boardman blanked GlenOak in other boys games.
HOWLAND -- Canfield High's boy soccer team clinched at least a tie for the Metro Athletic Conference championship Monday by defeating Howland 3-0.
Mark Pakula had two of the Cardinals' (5-4-3, 4-0-2 MAC) goals. Matt Pietro and Julian Donofrio had assists. Scott Seiser scored Canfield's other goal, and keeper Mark Kime had seven saves. Canfield out-shot Howland.
Tom Barfay had seven saves for the Tigers (6-5-2, 2-4).
Niles 1, Poland 0: NILES -- Senior forward Donny Eckrote scored from in close to lead Niles.
Each team had eight shots on goal.
Eckrote scored early in the game for the Red Dragons (7-3-3, 4-2-1 MAC).
Brett Gatta had seven saves in goal for Niles while Josh Pridon had four saves for Poland (1-9-3, 1-4-2).
Boardman 2, GlenOak 0: CANTON -- Andy Good and Jamie Hay each scored first-half goals for the Spartans (8-4-1).
GlenOak is 2-6-3.
Ryan Depp and Jason Ludban had assists for Boardman.
Goalie Joel Monaco had five saves and has four shutouts this season for the Spartans.
Girls: WARREN -- Leigh Carlson scored from about 18 yards out to lead Warren Harding to a 1-0 win over Austintown Fitch in the Steel Valley Conference.
Carlson scored late in the first half for the Raiders.
The Falcons (6-4-3, 1-2-1 SVC) had more shots on goal, 26-12.
Liberty 4, Badger 4: LIBERTY -- For Liberty, Brittney Humphrey had three goals, Cyndi Tochtenhagen had one. The Leopards (4-5-3) got assists by Carly Froomkin, Amy Banner, Humphrey and Abbey Mirkin. Rachael Tharp had seven saves. Briana Hideg had six saves. Badger's (4-4-1) Jenny Place had three goals and Tessa Bonar had one.
