YOUNGSTOWN -- Gunfire killed a man and wounded a woman and a girl who ran for their lives outside Smokey Joe's Lounge.
Patrolman Carlos Rivera heard shots in the Uptown district -- the 2700 block of Market Street -- at 2:15 a.m. Sunday. The officer had difficulty getting to the scene because of the large bar crowd that had spilled onto the sidewalks and street as people ran from the gunfire.
Within minutes, all available police responded.
Rivera, who had to maneuver around cars, found Terence L. Green, 27, of Youngstown collapsed a few doors away from Smokey Joe's on the sidewalk in front of the Uptown Theater. He had gunshot wounds to the head, chest and right shoulder. Green was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Females shot: Jessica Tarpley, 22, of Ferndale Avenue was shot in the right buttock, and Nicole A. Moore, 15, no address given, was grazed near her stomach. Both were treated at the hospital.
Moore told police that she had been on the sidewalk outside Smokey Joe's and ran when she heard several gunshots. Tarpley had been in front of the Uptown Theater when she was hit.
A witness driving by told police that he saw a man in a red flannel shirt firing at someone. He saw another man in a dark hooded sweat shirt firing down at Green's head and body.
Police are checking out a report that the Green homicide could be connected to the shooting death of Scottie Hornbuckle, 22, of Parkview Avenue. Hornbuckle was shot in the head at his house about 11:45 Friday.
Man stopped: A Mahoning County deputy sheriff in the area of the shooting early Sunday stopped a car that police thought may have been occupied by one of the suspects. Detectives questioned him and released him after giving him a gunshot residue test.
Green's death was the 24th homicide in the city this year. At this time last year, the city had recorded 23 homicides.
