COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW Mount Union vs. Wittenberg



What: Division III quarterfinal.
When: Noon Saturday.
Where: Mount Union Stadium, Alliance.
The series: Wittenberg holds an 18-9 edge, but Mount Union has won the last three games, including a 32-15 decision in last season's quarterfinal round.
At stake: A trip to the semifinals on Dec. 8 against the winner of Pacific Lutheran of Washington (8-2) and St. John's of Minnesota (10-2).
Mount Union (11-0) scouting report: The Purple Raiders are making their 13th playoff appearance. They have won 79 of their last 80 games and hold college football's longest current winning streak of 25 games. Leading the offense is junior QB Rob Adamson, who has completed 153-of-241 pass attempts for 2,578 yards and 23 TDs, with six INTs. Senior RB Chuck Moore has 1,497 yards on 206 carries and 25 total TDs, while junior RB Dan Pugh has added 740 yards on 148 carries and 13 total TDs. The top WR is senior Jason Candle, a West Branch High graduate, who has 47 catches for 993 yards and 11 TDs. Defensively, junior DE Matt Campbell has 66 tackles, 19 for loss, and eight sacks, while senior OLB Jason Perkins has 65 tackles, 11 for loss. The Purple Raiders, who defeated Augustana (Ill.) 32-7 in the second round last week, are coached by Larry Kehres (175-17-3 in his 16th year).
Wittenberg (10-1) scouting report: The Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Hardin-Simmons (Texas) 38-35 in overtime and Thomas More (Ky.) 41-0, both on the road. They are making their 10th playoff appearance. Leading the offense is QB Greg Cornett, who has completed 173-of-280 pass attempts for 2,359 yards and 22 TDs, with four INTs. RB Daniel Grove has totaled 1,594 yards on 259 carries and 25 TDs, while WR Mike Aljancic is averaging 14 yards-per-catch on 70 receptions and has 12 TDs. Defensively, FS John Hauser has 58 tackles and five INTs, while MLB Ryan Gresham has added 56 tackles and T Juan Howard 51 tackles and six sacks. The Tigers are coached by Joe Fincham (63-6 in his sixth year).
