MAHONING VALLEY Performance to feature South American sounds

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County and St. Rose of Lima Church are sponsoring Cuerdas de Fuego (Strings of Fire) at 7 p.m. Friday in the church at 50 Struthers-Coitsville Road.
The group combines a variety of South American sounds.
They began a two-week tour of Ohio on Wednesday, presented by the Ohio Arts Council.
The show also includes performances by the Ohio Arts Presenters Network and is free to the community.
The Ohio tour is part of a faith-based performing arts tour that began in 1998 to expose audiences to art forms from around the world.
The tour last visited the Mahoning Valley in 1999 with music and dance of India.
In Cuerdas de Fuego, three accomplished musicians from South and Central America perform fiery, passionate and romantic music. They perform on a variety of traditional instruments, including Paraguayan harp, Venezuelan-style cuatro, maracas, guitar and charango.
Cuerdas de Fuego performs traditional folk music from South America, dance melodies from the region and original numbers.
St. Rose of Lima is the only Spanish-speaking church in the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, pioneered by Puerto Ricans who came to the Valley in the 1950s to work in the steel mills.
