CANFIELD -- Two people reported to city police Monday that their mail was stolen after they mailed it at the post office on North Broad Street. A 46-year-old Canfield man said he had mailed 36 bill payments from personal and business accounts Oct. 13, including several credit card payments. None of the payments were received by creditors. A 51-year-old Canfield woman said she had mailed about a dozen pieces of mail, including bill payments and credit card and loan applications Nov. 4. None of the payments had been received by creditors.
Candidates sought
COLUMBUS -- Representatives of Gov. Bob Taft say they want to interview more candidates before appointing someone to fill the unexpired State Board of Education term of former Youngstown Mayor Jack Hunter, who died in June.
Officials said the governor's office has interviewed three people so far: James Roberts, also known as Ted, a lawyer from Poland in Mahoning County; Richard Wingerter, a retired schoolteacher from Marlington Local School District; and Jim Craig, a member of the Plain Board of Education. Wingerter and Craig are from Stark County.
The Eighth District, formerly represented by Hunter, covers Carroll, Columbiana, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson, Mahoning, Stark and Tuscarawas counties. Whoever is appointed would fill the remainder of Hunter's four-year term, which ends Dec. 31, 2002.
Armed robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- Party Pantry on Glenwood Avenue was robbed of about $250 around 5:22 p.m. Monday. Police said a man held a gun to the clerk's head. The robber was described as a black male, 6 feet tall, weighing about 180 pounds and wearing a plaid jacket and black trousers.

YOUNGSTOWN -- During a lineup at police headquarters, two robbery victims identified a 15-year-old Lakewood Avenue boy as the one who pulled a gun on them at 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Petra gas station on South Avenue and took cash and 75 CDs, reports show. The boy was taken to the juvenile justice center. The victims, from Lowellville and Struthers, also identified two men who had been in the suspects' car during the South Side robbery. The men were expected to be charged today with complicity to aggravated robbery. Police made the arrests after locating the suspects' car on Garfield Street.
High-speed chase
AUSTINTOWN -- Police arrested a 20-year-old Maplecrest Drive man after a high-speed car chase through residential streets.
Police charged him with failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer. He also was cited with several traffic offenses, including driving without a license.
The chase began when an officer saw the man doing 70 in a 40 mph zone on Kirk Road Saturday morning. The officer tried to pull the man over, but he refused to stop, instead leading police on a chase over state Route 46, New Road and Bexley Drive before stopping on Maplecrest Drive. The man got out of his car and ran but was arrested after a short chase.
Police later learned that the car belonged to the man's girlfriend, who said she knew the man had no license because of his poor driving record. Police cited her with giving an unlicensed driver the use of her car.
Assault charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Anthony J. Antonas, 21, of Howell Drive, Poland, has been charged with felonious assault related to a beating that took place outside Jay Jay's bar on Market Street around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Antonas is accused of punching and kicking Jared Ingram, 20, of Boardman. Ingram was attacked by Antonas and another man as he left the Uptown district bar, according to police reports. The other man had not been charged as of this morning. After being treated for facial wounds at Beeghly Medical Park, Ingram received dental treatment at Forum Health Northside Medical Center, police said. Detective Sgt. Rod Rodway obtained an arrest warrant Monday for Antonas, who was expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.
