LISBON -- The Columbiana County Health Board is asking the county prosecutor's office to take legal action to compel the owners of a construction and demolition debris landfill in Center Township to seal up the facility. The board learned Monday that an underground fire is smoldering at the Lisbon Landfill Inc. site on Steubenville Pike Road. The fire poses no public health or environmental threat, Bob Durbin, health board president, said today. A company will be hired by the health board to put out the fire, with the cost being billed to the landfill.
Charges in accident
SALEM -- A 19-year-old city man faces charges after a traffic accident that police say occurred when he attempted to elude them.
Perry Township police began a vehicle pursuit near midnight Monday after spotting the car on state Route 14 traveling more than 90 mph. In fleeing, the car entered Salem and crashed into the lot of an abandoned gas station near North Lincoln Avenue and Fifth Street. No injuries occurred.
Charges against the driver will include fleeing and eluding, speeding, reckless operation and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Jailed after car chase
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An Altman Road man is in jail after taking police on a chase throughout the city and causing a police car to crash.
Nikia Goode, 26, faces charges of driving under the influence, driving without a license, reckless driving, careless driving, failing to stop at stop or yield signs, fleeing and eluding police, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver.
Police saw Goode driving erratically and pass through a red light at the Columbus Innerbelt and West Washington Street at 1:14 a.m. Saturday. Goode drove off when they tried to stop his car. Police chased Goode and crashed into the back of his Buick Century when he suddenly stopped on King Street, they said.
Goode jumped out and started running and was eventually caught by a police officer. Police said after Goode jumped out of his car, it drifted into a yard and crashed into a camper at 102 King St.
Police said they found crack cocaine in Goode's pants pocket. He was arraigned before District Justice J.V. Lamb and put in the Lawrence County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
Charged in stabbing
FARRELL, Pa. -- A 21-year-old Sharon man remains in Mercer County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond after being charged with stabbing a 23-year-old French Street man in the stomach after an argument Friday evening in the 700 block of Broadway Avenue. Shawn Johnston was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Friday at his South State Line Road residence and arraigned on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment in the 10:30 p.m. stabbing of Randy Moore, who was treated at Sharon Regional Health System, police said.
College enrollment
SHARON, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango will conduct its annual spring enrollment day from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday in the campus admissions office, 206 Sharon Hall in downtown Sharon, for students wishing to apply for admission and financial aid for spring semester. Students should bring copies of their high school transcripts, or, if they've completed college courses elsewhere, their college transcripts and copies of their 2000 tax returns.
Route 154 tree planting
LISBON -- A joint tree-planting venture along state Route 154 will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday by the Ohio Department of Transportation and the village. According to Councilman Bob Sheehan, 80 trees are to be planted. ODOT will dig the holes and local volunteer labor will be used to plant the trees. Sheehan said anyone wishing to help is welcome.
