Sept. 11 donations
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown reports that as of Tuesday, more than $109,000 has been collected and forwarded to Catholic Charities USA to assist Catholic Charities agencies in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania respond to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Donations are still being accepted, and checks may be made payable to Catholic Charities Domestic Disaster Fund, c/o Office of Social Action, Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, 144 W. Wood St., Youngstown 44503. Call (330) 744-8451, Ext. 320.
Kettle campaign
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Salvation Army in Mahoning County has launched its annual Red Kettle fund-raising campaign, which will run through December. Local Salvation Army officials are concerned that with the large amount of attention and funding committed to relief in New York, local needs might be overlooked.
The Salvation Army in Mahoning County has, with community support, sent volunteers and local contributions to aid these efforts. Attention is now focused on providing emergency service to local individuals who are living on the margin of life.
This Christmas some 2,000 families will receive some form of assistance in the form of food or toys.
Major David Lyle, the area coordinator for the Salvation Army in Mahoning County, encouraged everyone to look for the Red Kettles when they are out shopping.
Music program
CANFIELD -- "A Christmas Celebration" with a 90-member choir and a 30-member orchestra will be at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 and 7 p.m. Dec. 8 and 9 in Old North Church of Canfield. The concert is free. For tickets, call (330) 533-6848.
Holiday, gospel music
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Everything Under the Son Ministries will have its annual Family Night of Praise Concert from 7 to 9:30 p.m. next Saturday in New Covenant Church. The free concert will include both gospel and holiday music. Call (724) 656-6802.
Nativity scene set
New Castle -- King's Chapel United Methodist Church will have its eighth annual drive-through Nativity from 6 to 9 p.m. next Saturday and Dec. 2. The event consists of 10 scenes depicting the first Christmas, complete with actors and animals. The event is free. Call (724) 658-7569.
Outdoor Nativity
Champion -- An outdoor Nativity will be at 6 and 7 p.m. Dec. 16 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Performances are about 20 minutes long. Members of the congregation will present "Song of Christmas." Free refreshments will be served in the church. Call (330) 847-0200.
Feast celebrated
HUBBARD -- St. Patrick Parish will have a ceremony of "Advent Lessons and Carols" in honor of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 in the church. A reception will follow.
Poster winners
BOARDMAN -- The 2001-2002 theme for the International Peace Poster Contest sponsored locally by the Boardman Lion's Club was "Lighting the Path To World Peace." Sixth-grade Confraternity of Christian Doctrine students from St. Paul the Apostle Parish in New Middletown took part. The winner was Francesca Popovich of Poland and the runner-ups were Eric Porinchak and Boomer Duraney, both of New Middletown.
Book study to meet
COLUMBIANA -- Jerusalem Lutheran Church will have a book study, "Lifecycles: Reincarnation and the Web of Life," Jan. 7 to 28. Those interested should read the book before the study. Call (330) 482-2136.
