SALEM -- A man told police that someone broke into a residential rental property he owns and damaged it.
The crime occurred over the weekend at a building in the 190 block of North Ellsworth Avenue.
The vandals kicked in the front door, broke two windows and tore the doors off three kitchen cupboards.
Pa. troopers arrest2 on drug charges
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police arrested two men they said they found with a large quantity of a hallucinogenic or stimulant drug in their vehicle.
Police said Marlon A. Scott, 23, of South Ozone Park, N.Y., and George Brown, 49, of Cleveland, were westbound on Interstate 80 around 5:30 a.m. Monday when a trooper saw their vehicle go off the road.
The trooper investigated and found that Scott was wanted on an outstanding warrant charging him with possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was arrested, and a search of the vehicle turned up 520 doses of the drug Ecstasy, a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said.
Both men were charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, arraigned and lodged in Mercer County Jail with bond set at $100,000 each. Brown later posted bond and was released.
School roofing contract
AUSTINTOWN -- Roth Bros. Inc. of Austintown has received a $126,389 contract to build a new roof on Woodside Elementary School.
The Austintown school board approved the contract at a meeting Monday. Superintendent Richard Denamen said the roof was leaking.
Money for the project will come from the board's general fund. Denamen said work on the roof will be done this winter or next spring, depending on the weather.
Food bank donation
YOUNGSTOWN -- From now through Dec. 22, customers can buy paper turkeys from local Rite Aid stores for $1 each, and the money will be donated to Second Harvest Foodbank to feed hungry people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
The turkeys may be bought at the checkout counter. Customers will have the opportunity to sign their names and hang the turkeys in the store to encourage others to give. Last year the program generated more than $150,000 for Second Harvest Foodbanks in Ohio and Michigan.
Second Harvest Foodbank of the Mahoning Valley, on East Midlothian Boulevard, provides food to more than 20 agencies in the three counties, including church pantries, homeless shelters, shelters for battered women and child and adult day-care centers.
Youngstown Connection
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Connection -- a 12-member song and dance troupe representing city high schools -- will be at a news conference New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will have at 11 a.m. Wednesday at a fire station near ground zero, where the World Trade Center's twin towers collapsed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The Connection also will perform at 9 and 11:50 a.m. in Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which will be broadcast live on WFMJ-TV Channel 21.
Vaccine shots planned
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown City Health Department is offering flu and pneumonia shots to all ages from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave.
The flu shot costs $10, and the pneumonia shot costs $15.
Medicare Part B recipients should bring their cards, because most, if not all, Part B recipients are eligible for the shots at no cost.
The shots are available to nonresidents as well as residents.
