McDONALD -- McDonald schools have received a $3,000 Wellness Block Grant from the Trumbull County Family and Children First Council for this school year. The grant pays for a teen program, encompassing problems from drug use to teen-age pregnancy.
State recycling grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Columbiana and Mahoning counties and the city of Youngstown are among 97 Ohio jurisdictions sharing more than $6.9 million in 2002 Recycle Ohio grants. Columbiana and Mahoning counties are each receiving $84,900 and Youngstown is getting $56,600.
The grants, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, support recycling collection, waste reduction, awareness campaigns and litter prevention programs.
Man faces charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police have charged a 24-year-old St. Louis Avenue man with felony counts of carrying a concealed weapon and aggravated trafficking in marijuana and misdemeanor drug abuse after searching the man's car while he was sitting in the parking lot of a South Avenue nightspot late Friday.
Reports say the man was acting suspiciously as police approached his car. According to reports, officers saw suspected marijuana in the car and placed him under arrest. Police said a search of the vehicle uncovered a gun and more suspected marijuana packaged for sale.
The South Side man was placed in Mahoning County Jail and was to be arraigned on the charges later today.
Trustee elected
CANFIELD -- Dave Prosser was recently elected a trustee of Western Reserve Village, the restored historical village at the Canfield Fair.
Prosser retired from Youngstown Sheet & amp; Tube Co., where he oversaw a computer system, and from the Youngstown Playhouse and Youngstown Symphony, where he worked as a bookkeeper.
Soliciting sex
BOARDMAN -- Police were called to Kaufmann's at Southern Park Mall after a security officer there detained a man accused of soliciting sex in a restroom Saturday afternoon. The security guard said the man passed a note asking for sex to the security guard under a stall partition.
According to police reports, the officer wrote, "Kaufmann's security, exit the stall," and passed the note back. The officer apprehended the man, restraining him with handcuffs. The suspect flushed the note before he exited the stall.
Because Boardman police did not witness the event they could not make an arrest, but charges may still be filed.
String of thefts
BOARDMAN -- Thieves broke into four vehicles parked in the lots of various retail establishments Saturday night and stole various stereo equipment and CDs.
The thefts occurred in the parking lots of Babies "R" Us, 1240 Doral Drive; Longhorn Steak House, 953 Boardman-Poland Road; Ruby Tuesday's, 7401 Market St.; and Outback Steak House, 7000 Tiffany Boulevard South. In most cases, the door locks were punched out to gain entry.
Agency workers to vote
WARREN -- Workers at the Trumbull County Child Support Enforcement Agency were to vote this morning on an tentative labor agreement that could end their 4-week-old strike.
The tentative agreement between union negotiators and the Trumbull County commissioners was pounded out during a negotiating session Sunday that stretched for more than seven hours, said county commissioner Michael O'Brien. Neither the state-appointed mediator nor the commission's Cleveland lawyer was present, he said.
The major issue in the strike by 55 members of American Federation of State, Municipal and County Employees local 3808 has been paying for health insurance.
