Drug, weapons arrests
NILES -- Agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms have arrested a city man and a Youngstown man on narcotics and weapons charges after a raid at a Niles home. City police said that a Niles woman was also arrested and charged with possession of drugs.
Investigators and agents from several area police departments made the arrests Friday after a raid at a home in the 200 block of South Cedar Street. The raid followed a four-month investigation during which officers reportedly bought crack cocaine at the residence. Police recovered various drugs and weapons from the home. Police said additional charges will be filed on others suspected of selling drugs out of the home.
Children and seat belts
NILES -- Police will focus on the proper restraint of children in vehicles next week. The officers are participating in Operation America Buckles Up Children Mobilization. Additional officers will be on patrol to specifically target drunken driving violations and drivers who fail to properly restrain child passengers. Extra officers also will be on patrol during the Thanksgiving weekend, focusing on DUI, seat belt and child restraint violations, speeding and aggressive driving. The effort is funded through a $32,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Meeting change
VIENNA -- Mathews Board of Education has changed its meeting from Wednesday to 7 p.m. Nov. 28 in the board offices, 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road.
Landfill forum planned
SEBRING -- The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled a public information session for 7 p.m. Monday at Sebring McKinley High School to discuss the expansion of a landfill, located at 12003 Oyster Road, owned by Central Waste Inc. Central Waste's plans include an expansion of the landfill that would take up about 25 acres of new land within the facility.
If approved, waste officials said, the expansion would give the landfill a life expectancy of about 32 years at a waste intake of 800 tons per day. The facility is authorized to accept 3,000 tons per day. Officials said no change in authorized daily waste intake is proposed.
Flu, pneumonia shots
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown City Health Department is offering flu and pneumonia shots to all ages from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the YMCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave.; and from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 3, at the health department office, 345 Oak Hill Ave., Suite 200.
The flu shot is $10, and the pneumonia shot is $15. Medicare Part B clients should bring their cards, as most, but not all, Part B recipients are eligible for the shots at no cost.
Trustees meeting
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township Fire Chief Rick Pellin told township trustees that that seven people recently passed EMS training, bringing the number of EMS-trained fire department personnel to 13. He also reported that three new firefighters passed training last week, bringing that total to 30.
