YOUNGSTOWN -- Rochelle Hurt, a Ursuline High School junior, was selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference this month. She joined 350 other high school students from around the nation for the six-day meeting.
Slippery Rock professor named Educator of Year
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Dr. Paul Black, professor of secondary education at Slippery Rock University, has been named Teacher Educator of the Year by the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. The award is given annually to one educator from the 91 public and private teacher preparation universities in Pennsylvania.
"I'm extremely flattered and honored to receive such a prestigious award because I'm well aware of the accomplishments of those who have received the award in prior years," said Black, who came to SRU in 1972.
Allegheny College opens office to help students
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College's admissions office recently opened a Northeast Ohio Regional Office to help students interested in attending the school. The college has appointed Jennifer Fitzpatrick as the office's associate regional director of admissions. She will work out of her home in Twinsburg. She will attend college fairs and conduct visits to high schools in the area. Nearly 16.2 percent of Allegheny's alumni are residents of Northeast Ohio and about 11 percent of the college's student body of 1,850 hail from the region.
Garfield Society inducts Regents chairwoman
HIRAM -- Jeanette Grasselli Brown, chairwoman of the Ohio Board of Regents, was among eight people recently inducted into the Hiram College Garfield Society. The society is named for James A. Garfield, 20th president of the United States and a former student and president at Hiram. The society honors people who have contributed to better Hiram and Northeast Ohio.
Brown was appointed to OBOR in 1997 by former Gov. George Voinovich. Other inductees were Hiram President Richard J. Scaldini; trustees Donald L. Batisky and Max E. Burr; and professors Mary Ann Brockett, Nikki Cvetkovic, Joyce Dyer and Ellen Summers.
Union director to give speech on funding
CLEVELAND -- "Vouchers and Public School Funding" will be the topic of a speech by Michael Charney, professional issues director of the Cleveland Teachers Union, 4 p.m. Dec. 9 in the Unitarian-Universalist Society of Cleveland in Cleveland Heights. The free program is sponsored by the Ethical Society of Cleveland. Charney also is editor of Critique, the union's publication.
