MERCER -- The Mercer County Courthouse will close at noon Christmas Eve.
County commissioners agreed Thursday that the employees can make up for the two hours of work they will lose by taking a half-hour instead of an hour for lunch the entire week before.
In other business, commissioners reassigned Brenda Lauer from part-time to full-time dispatcher at the 911 Center to replace an employee who resigned.
Woman hospitalizedafter being beaten
SHARON, Pa. -- Alisha Wilson, 18, of Mesabi Street, was in satisfactory condition in Sharon Regional Health System and her ex-boyfriend was in jail after a fight at her residence at 11:45 a.m. Thursday.
Police said the 21-year-old George Street man is accused of repeatedly punching Wilson in the face, breaking facial bones and a tooth. She may have also suffered some internal injuries, police said.
The man fled but turned himself in at police headquarters around 3 p.m.
He was arrested on charges of criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and violation of a protection from abuse court order. He was held overnight and faced arraignment today.
Gas saw stolen
HERMITAGE, Pa. --Police said a gas-powered saw equipped with a stone cutting blade was stolen from David Construction Co., 1991 S. Hermitage Road, between 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday. The saw was taken from the back of a truck parked in the company garage and there was no sign of forced entry to the building, police said. The saw is valued at $800.
Dredging donation
WARREN - Trumbull 100, a local philanthropic group, will donate $18,000 toward Trumbull County's effort to raise funds for the next phase of the Mahoning River Dredging Project, said Gary Newbrough, director of the Trumbull County Planning Commission.
Last week, Newbrough sent out letters requesting corporate donations. Of the $75,000 still needed to get the project off the ground, officials have agreed to raise $36,000 within Trumbull County. "Hopefully, this will be a call to all the other companies to contribute," he said.
Wellness Block Grant
McDONALD -- McDonald schools have received a new $3,000 Wellness Block Grant from the Trumbull County Family and Children First Council for this school year.
The grant pays for a teen-life-issues program, encompassing problems from drug use to teen-age pregnancy.
Renovating fire hall
CANFIELD -- Township trustees will hire an architect to create plans for renovation of the fire hall on Messerly Road and the construction of a township salt dome.
Trustees Paul Moracco and William Weaver recently voted in favor of a resolution authorizing the hiring. Trustee Judy Bayus was opposed.
It is hoped that the renovations provide more room for Cardinal Joint Fire District firefighters at the hall and that the salt dome reduces the township's road salt costs.
Missing golf carts
COITSVILLE -- Countryside Golf Course, on Coitsville Road, was missing seven gas-powered golf carts Wednesday but three turned up nearby in bushes by a new mausoleum at St. John's Cemetery, Coitsville police said.
Whoever took the carts cut through a heavy cable that secures them together, said Allan P. Morris, assistant police chief. The value of the missing carts was not reported.
Campbell jail rated
CAMPBELL -- The Campbell City Jail has met 100 percent of the state jail standards for the second consecutive year.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction looks at about 14 standards for jails during their annual inspections. This year, inspections focused on jail security and prisoner discipline.
