Arrested after car fire
WARREN -- After a fight with his sister and brother, a 29-year-old Hazelwood S.E. man set a car on fire in their driveway, according to police reports. He was arrested Tuesday evening and taken to Trumbull County Jail. He was to be arraigned today on an arson charge.

WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the county administration building. It had been scheduled for Champion High School.
Benefit concert
WARREN -- A concert Friday to benefit Harding High School's FIRST robotics team will be in the school auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The $6 admission charge goes to Harding's Team ELITE, which took the national championship in 1999. Harding is one of 800 schools involved in FIRST, or For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Local bands participating are Kitchen Knife Conspiracy, Cyrus, Red Shift and Driven. Fred Whitacre, a Harding English teacher, is a member of Kitchen Knife Conspiracy.
Traficant case
CLEVELAND -- U.S. District Magistrate Judge William H. Baughman Jr. has recommended that U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. be permitted to continue representing himself without the assistance of a lawyer. Traficant, of Poland, D-17th, opted in February to represent himself against federal bribery, racketeering and tax evasion charges. The magistrate, who arraigned Traficant on a superseding indictment Friday, made the recommendation to U.S. District Judge Leslie Brooks Wells after asking Traficant a series of questions.
Ex-postmaster indicted
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has issued a two-count indictment charging a former Farmdale postmaster with misuse of postal money orders and embezzlement. Sallie J. Carlson, 48, of Perkins Jones Road, Warren, was charged with converting blank postal money orders to her own use or the use of others, in the process, embezzling $11,758, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Positions availablein township zoning
MINERAL RIDGE -- Applications are being accepted by trustees until Dec. 1 for positions on the Weathersfield Township Zoning Commission and the Weathersfield Board of Zoning Appeals. The five-year seat of James Stoddard on the zoning commission will be vacant Jan. 1 because Stoddard has to resign after being elected as a township trustee. The zoning board seat of Tim McNeil will be vacant because McNeil is leaving after completing his five-year term Dec. 31.
Slaying victim found
YOUNGSTOWN -- Workers on cleanup detail with the city's litter control department Tuesday afternoon found the body of an unidentified man who had been shot execution style. The victim was discovered about 1:30 p.m. on Atkinson Avenue with duct tape around his neck and wrists, according to reports. The man, dressed in faded blue jeans, red T-shirt and black hooded sweat shirt, is the city's 28th homicide victim of the year and the fourth in two weeks. At this time last year, there were 25 homicides. As of this morning, the coroner had not made a positive identification of a man found shot to death Monday on the South Side.

SALEM -- The Salem Humane Society is offering a chance to be photographed with either Santa or a miniature horse. The photos will be taken at the agency's office, 159 S. Ellsworth Ave., from 8 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $7. Proceeds will help benefit the humane society's animal welfare efforts.
Inmate indicted
CLEVELAND -- A 21-year-old inmate who, authorities said, fled the Federal Correctional Institution at Elkton on Oct. 9 and was captured Oct. 22 in Youngstown has been indicted by a federal grand jury. Terrell Martin, formerly of Lansdowne Boulevard, Youngstown, is charged with escape. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He is serving time at Elkton on a drug conviction.
