Loyola of Chicagois Horizon champion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Loyola of Chicago won the first-ever Horizon League volleyball championship with a 30-26, 30-16, 30-20 decision over Youngstown State on Saturday at Beeghly Center.
YSU (10-16, 1-13) will meet Loyola (18-8, 13-1) for the third time this season in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament on Friday.
The Penguins led most of the first game, including a 20-16 margin at one point. Sophomores Annie Buscher and Laura Svette each had eight kills for YSU and senior Melissa Lyczkowski had 31 assists.
Also for YSU, Rebecca Sylak served three aces.
Runners in regional
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Sophomore Matt Paullin placed 58th in 32 minutes, 26.1 seconds as the Youngstown State men's cross country team finished 26th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Saturday.
Jim Tatarka of the Penguins came in 68th (32:47.1).
Notre Dame took meet honors and YSU placed 15th of 31 schools.
Freshman Emily Schnitkey of YSU placed 119th (23:99.9) in the women's run as the Penguins finished 26th of 31 teams.
Swimmers, divers lose at St. Francis
LORETTO, Pa. -- The Youngstown State swimming and diving team lost a dual meet to St. Francis (Pa.) 121-115 Saturday.
Individual winners for the Penguins included Dawn Knight in the 50-yard freestyle, Erin Hanson (1,650 freestyle), Alycia LaFace (200 freestyle), Aren Barbee (100 butterfly), Melissa Mizer (100 freestyle), Megan Blazek (100 backstroke and 200 individual medley), Erika Gregos (500 freestyle) and Amanda Howard (100 breaststroke).
The Penguins return to action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when they host John Carroll at the Beeghly Center Natatorium.

Berdis, Yeagleyat Curbstoners
BOARDMAN -- Ron Berdis and Dan Yeagley will be guests of the Curbstone Coaches during their noon luncheon Monday at the Lockwood House.
Berdis is the football coach at Chaney High, while Yeagley coaches South Range.
Mooney-Ursulinedefeats Hopewell
BOARDMAN -- Joey Toth scored three goals to lead Mooney-Ursuline to a 7-4 victory over Hopewell in a hockey game Saturday at the Ice Zone.
Phil Colucci, Luke Johnston and Joe Tacsik also scored for Mooney-Ursuline (1-1), while Adam Sturm, Mark Stoner and Allan Neher each had an assist.
Goalkeeper Anthony Sabatka stopped 24-of-28 shots Hopewell tried.
Mt. Union runnersadvance to nationals
ALLIANCE -- The Mount Union College men's and women's cross country teams both advanced to nationals following competition at the regional at Kalamazoo College (Mich.).
Mark Prejsnar placed fifth in 25 minutes, 29.6 seconds, helping the Purple Raiders finish second of 31 schools.
Bryan Less (24:45.8) of Mount Union was 11th, while teammates Joe Eby (25:55.6) placed 13th, Ryan Hochstetler (26:23.3) was 21st and Ryan Price (26:23.3) was 22nd.
Kristen Koeling placed 12th in 18:42.9 as the Purple Raider women were third of 27 teams. Mount Union's Holly Friedrich (19:08.4) was 27th, Elena Hoellein (19:12.8) was 30th, Kelly Hammond (19:29.1) was 39th and Erin McCauley (19:35.3) was 50th.
The top three men's and women's teams advanced to the nationals at Rock Island, Ill., next Saturday.
Thiel wrestlinginvited to OSU
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Thiel College wrestling team and first-year coach Jerry Tennant have been invited to the 2002 Cliff Keen/National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals on Jan. 19-20 at Ohio State.
Thiel was 21st in the latest Adidas/Brute NWCA Div. III Wrestling Coaches poll.
Thiel's Williamsis coach of year
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Bryan Williams, head women's soccer coach at Thiel College, was named the 2001 Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Coach of the Year.
Williams led Thiel to its most successful season ever, 7-10-4. They were 4-16 last year.

CHESTER, W.Va. -- Undefeated Hercules Kyvelos (19-0, 10 knockouts) will face Michael Covington (23-2, 13 KO's) in a feature fight of a Showtime card Dec. 1 at Mountaineer Race Track.
Kyvelos of Montreal and Covington of Trenton, N.J., will meet in a welterweight fight. The co-feature will send cruiserweight Tim Williamson (11-0, 8 KO's) of Pittsburgh against Andrew Greely (9-0, 6 KO's) of Monroe, La.

Mercer High setfor HOF ceremony
MERCER, Pa. -- Three former athletes, a coach who has served on national and Olympic committees and the 1967 state championship basketball team are all part of the second class of inductees into the Mercer High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
The group will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame during a post-game ceremony Dec. 7 at 9 p.m. following the Grove City at Mercer High boys basketball game.
Selected for induction into the Mercer Hall of Fame are Mark Brown, Mark Hannay, Renzie Hoffman (posthumous), Chuck Marsh (posthumous), Ken Tarcy and the 1967 state championship basketball team.

Crowd of 47,743 at prep doubleheader
CINCINNATI -- A doubleheader featuring Cincinnati's four best Division I teams drew 47,743 people, a record for an Ohio high school football state tournament.
St. Xavier, No. 2 in the state, beat Princeton, 6-0, in the first regional semifinal Saturday at Paul Brown Stadium. Then No. 3 Elder beat No. 1 Colerain 35-21.
The state playoffs attendance record was 31,409 in 1982, a championship doubleheader at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
