Trauma center named
AKRON -- The American College of Surgeons has designated Children's Hospital Medical Center as a pediatric trauma center. Of the 61,441 visits registered in Children's Hospital emergency department in 2000, 19,761 were trauma related with about 400 considered significant trauma. The hospital's burn center cared for about 1,712 acute burn traumas last year.
Disease seminar slated
ROOTSTOWN -- Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine's Office of Continuing Medical Education will present the 19th annual Infectious Disease Seminar for physicians, Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Naples, Fla. Presenters will include Dr. Thomas M. File Jr., co-activity director, professor internal medicine and master teacher at NEOUCOM, and chief of infectious disease service at Summa Health System; and Dr. James S. Tan, professor of internal medicine, chairman of the infectious disease section and master teacher at NEOUCOM, and chairman of the department of medicine at Summa Health System. Med student gets award for research
ROOTSTOWN -- Thomas Scharschmidt, a second-year medical student at NEOUCOM, was awarded the $5,000 Glenn/American Federation for Aging Research Scholarship. Scharschmidt, of Akron, and a 1999 Kent State University Honors College graduate, is researching the pathology of osteoarthritis.
Drug research funded
CLEVELAND -- Researchers at Case Western University School of Medicine and University Hospitals of Cleveland will receive $2.5 million over five years to examine the long-term effects of the drug MDMA, known as Ecstasy, on a developing fetus, and the physical and psychological effects on a mother. The research is funded by the National Institutes of Health. Case Western will collaborate with researchers from the University of East London in Great Britain.
Creative dance program
