Volleyball team falls
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Rebecca Sylak had 11 kills in a losing cause as the Penguins' volleyball team was handed a 30-27, 30-24, 30-28 setback by Illinois-Chicago in a Horizon League match Friday at Beeghly Center.
Kristen Meech of YSU had eight kills and eight blocks, while Carmeran Drake had 13 digs and Melissa Lyczkowski 34 assists.
Robic show Tuesday
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State men's basketball coach John Robic's first radio show will be held Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. at the downtown BW-3 location.
The show will air prior to the Penguin Playbook with YSU football coach Jon Heacock and Bob Hannon, which begins at 7 p.m.
Joining Robic during the season will be John Batcho. The dates and times of future Robic radio shows throughout the season will be announced next week.
YSU begins the 2001-02 basketball season Nov. 17 at Evansville.
LOCAL
Masters begins
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 15th annual Youngstown Masters, sponsored by the Youngstown Bowling Association, begins today at 5 p.m. at Bell-Wick Bowl.
The Masters continues Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. at Wedgewood Lanes then Nov. 17 at A-Plus Family Bowl. The finals are Nov. 18 at Boardman Lanes.
The ABC-sanctioned event pays $1,000 first prize, based on 60 entries.
The winner receives a paid entry into the ABC Masters in Reno, Nev.
Co-sponsors are Bell-Wick, Wedgewood, A-Plus and Boardman.
Seniors tournament
AUSTINTOWN -- The second annual Seniors Team Tournament for bowlers 55 and over will take place Nov. 17-18 at Wedgewood Lanes.
First place team prize is $600 based on 40 entries. The event is ABC and WIBC sanctioned. Entry fee is $60 per team. Entries close Nov. 14 at 10 p.m.
Thanksgiving event
HUBBARD -- The second annual Thanksgiving Scratch Sweeper -- five games over five pairs of lanes -- will be held Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at Bell-Wick Bowl.
First place will pay $600 based on 50 entries. The entry fee is $50. One out of five will cash. One-hundred dollars will be added to first place for every 10 entries over 50.
Area officialsat state volleyball
DAYTON -- John Rorick of Austintown and Jim Pepperney of Canfield of the Mahoning Volleyball Officials Association are officiating at the OHSAA state tournament.
It is the 21st consecutive year that the two men have been officiating at the event.
Kevin McKinstry of East Palestine is also officiating for his 14th state tournament, while Joyce Ramsey of Campbell is there for her fifth tournament, Glen Windram of Leetonia his second and Rick Shiver of Columbiana his first.
Geneva wins
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Geneva College men's basketball team placed five players in double figures as it opened its season with a 92-44 win over Lancaster Bible College on Friday.
Tonight, Geneva will meet Taylor College in the final of the Tornado Tip-Off Classic. Taylor beat Ohio Dominican 69-62.
Junior transfer Terrance Ward led the Golden Tornadoes with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

'Football 101'
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns host "Football 101," a chalk talk for women, from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The event gives women -- who make up 51 percent of the team's fan base -- an opportunity to learn the game from players, coaches and front office personnel.

Indians hire Belcher
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians hired former major league pitcher Tim Belcher on Friday as a special assistant to baseball operations.
Belcher, 40, was 146-140 in a career spanning 14 years and seven clubs.
Mark Shapiro, general manager, said Belcher will teach and evaluate players.
Browns' McKenzie out for season
BEREA -- The Cleveland Browns put defensive end Keith McKenzie on injured reserve Friday and activated linebacker Lenoy Jones.
McKenzie broke his left ankle during last weekend's overtime loss in Chicago, had surgery Wednesday and will be out for the season. He will wear a cast for three months and won't be able to run for four months.
Whitney activated
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Blue Jackets activated left wing Ray Whitney from the injured reserve list on Friday.
He started in Friday night's home game against the Edmonton Oilers.

MIYAZAKI, Japan -- British Open champion David Duval shot a 4-under-par 67 to maintain a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Dunlop Challenge.
Play suspended
JEREZ, Spain -- Ireland's Paul McGinley was 9 under through 12 holes when high wind forced the suspension of play in the second round of the season-ending Volvo Masters.
