YOUNGSTOWN -- Cardinal Mooney High School's speech team has been named to the National Forensic League's 200 Club. The designation places Mooney's chapter among the top 5 percent of speech chapters in the nation.
"Mooney's program is teaching essential life skills -- communication, research, listening, writing, organization -- to a large number of students, not just a few 'stars,'" said James Copeland, NFL national secretary.
Diane Mastro Nard is the school's forensics director. More than 90 students and coaches are involved in the Mooney program.
GED test to be givenat Mahoning center
CANFIELD -- The General Educational Development test will be given Wednesday and Thursday at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. The test, which provides a high school equivalency diploma, will be given at 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day. The exam is free to adults who have passed an official GED practice test and are taking the test for the first time. Adults at least 19 years of age and out of high school are eligible for the test.
Family pledges$440,000 to college
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- A Meadville couple and their children have pledged $440,000 to Allegheny College over the next three years to support the preservation and documentation of the college's history.
Dr. Wayne and Sally Merrick have pledged $190,000 to underwrite an archivist position and archival operating budget at the college. The couple and their five children have pledged an additional $250,000 to create a space within the college's Pelletier Library to house the archives.
The Merricks moved to Meadville from New York in 1952. Dr. Merrick was chairman of the college's political science department for 29 years.
BGSU doctoral programranked first in nation
BOWLING GREEN -- The doctoral program in higher education administration at Bowling Green State University is ranked first in the nation by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students. In compiling the rankings, 32,000 graduate students and recent doctorate recipients graded their doctoral programs. Bowling Green's program received an overall grade of A minus.
