YOUNGSTOWN
United Veterans Council, VFW County Council and American Legion County Council, 11 a.m. Sunday, Mahoning County Courthouse rotunda. State Rep. John Boccieri of New Middletown, D-57th, a captain and a pilot in the Air Force Reserve, will be the main speaker. Veterans, government officials and the general public are invited to attend."The Valley's Tribute to American Heroes: A Red, White and Blue Parade" will be Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. on Market Street at Nisonger Drive and ending at the Boardman Administration Building. Police and firefighters, veterans and the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will be honored. Twenty veterans groups have entered the parade, including the United Veterans Council of the Greater Mahoning Valley.John J. Buckley Post 1292 Catholic War Veterans and Ladies Auxiliary, 4 p.m. Monday ceremony, at the post home.St. Columba Cathedral, 2 p.m. Sunday, memorial Mass. Cardinal Mooney High School Choir and others will provide music at 1:45 p.m. Several color guards will participate.Oak Hill Cemetery, 2 p.m. Sunday; program to honor Civil War veterans, conducted by the 19th Ohio Regiment (Ohio Volunteer Militia), 105th Ohio Volunteer Militia (United States Colored Troops) and 125th Ohio Regiment (OVM).
AUSTINTOWN
Fitch High School, annual student assembly to honor veterans, 9 a.m. Friday. The speaker will be Bruce Montgomery, a faculty member who joined the Marine Corps in 1975, was promoted to warrant officer in 1983 and to captain in 1990, and served in the Gulf War before retiring after 24 years. The Fitch Concert Choir will perform.
NORTH LIMA
South Range fifth-graders, 11 a.m.; program to honor all veterans, at South Range High School, 11836 South Ave.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
WARREN
Trumbull County Veterans Day Federation, service, 1 p.m. Sunday, Monument Park in downtown Warren; followed by a parade at 1:30 p.m. beginning at Second National Bank on East Market Street, going east on Market, north on Chestnut Street and west on High Street to Pine Street. Robert Mangold, retired Army colonel, will be the parade marshal and speaker. He is a member of American Legion Post 540 in Cortland, which will provide the honor guard. Taps will be played by Jodi Khlem of Kent State University, and Brian Crites, a Warren policeman, will play the bagpipes. Open houses after parade will be at American Legion Post 278, 2237 N. Park Ave., and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1090, 611 High.
VIENNA
Vienna VFW Post 3521, service, 2 p.m. Sunday, Crown Hill Cemetery Chapel. Speaker will be Fire Chief Richard Brannon. The Mathews High School Choir, directed by Marty Young, will perform patriotic songs.
GIRARD
Girard Veterans Council, parade at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by ceremony at the Market Street War Memorial. Mayor James Melfi will be the main speaker; a flag-raising will be conducted by the Girard police and fire departments to honor safety workers who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. A wreath will be placed on the Girard-McDonald Viaduct to honor deceased Navy and Merchant Marine veterans.
COLUMBIANA COUNTY
COLUMBIANA
American Legion Benjamin Firestone Post 290 members will dedicate the new Legion post at 2 p.m. Sunday. Members will conduct a ceremony with an honor guard and give a history of Post 290. The new post home is at 44345 state Route 14 on the city's east side.Joshua Dixon Elementary fourth-grade pupils will present a musical salute to veterans and active service members at 2:15 p.m. Friday. The school is at 333 N. Middle St.Crestview Schools will honor veterans and active service members during a 10 a.m. assembly Friday at Crestview Elementary, 3407 Middleton Road. The assembly is the culmination of a unit study of history and freedom by grades two through four.
SALEM
The public is invited to Kent State University's Salem campus, on state Route 45 south of Salem, for an event that will include a health fair, veterans information seminar and motorcycle display. The event will be from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
LAWRENCE COUNTY
NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
The Wilmington Area School District and Westminster College will be host to a Veterans Day program at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Westminster's Orr Auditorium. A parade from the high school to the college will precede the program. Admiral Robert Shumaker, the second-longest-held prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, will be the keynote speaker. Shumaker was held captive for eight years, alongside Arizona Sen. John McCain, after being shot down in 1965. He was recently featured in the PBS documentary "Return With Honor." Before Vietnam, Shumaker was a finalist in the 1962 Apollo space program. Local World War II veterans Harry Gerber and Paul McConnell will receive high school diplomas during the ceremony, and six former POWs from the area will be recognized. The POWs expected to attend are: Abie Abraham, Charles Balik, Thomas Cody, William Fisher, Earl Parker and Cyril Vrabel.
MERCER COUNTY
SHARON
Mayor Robert T. Price will rededicate Veterans Walkway on West State Street with the unveiling of a plaque at 10 a.m. Sunday in the walkway. The ceremony will be followed by the traditional dropping of a wreath into the Shenango River from the State Street Bridge at 11 a.m. The Blue Star Mothers participate in that ceremony to honor veterans.
FARRELL
The annual Shenango Valley Veterans Day Parade will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Farrell High School, move south along Roemer Boulevard to Spearman Avenue and end at Veterans Square.
WEST MIDDLESEX
Mercer County Korean War Veterans will lay a wreath at the Korean War Memorial on state Route 318 in Shenango Township at the Ohio line at 11 a.m. Saturday.
GREENVILLE
The Greenville Veterans Day Committee will hold a remembrance and fellowship program at 2 p.m. Sunday at American Legion Post 140, 278 Main St. Lt. Col. Merle Duane Hart, director of operations at Youngstown Air Reserve Base, Vienna, will be the speaker.
