SALEM -- George W.S. Hays, director of the Salem Public Library, was in serious condition this morning at Cleveland Metro Health Center after being hit by a van here Monday afternoon.
Police said Hays, 47, of 940 W. Milton, Alliance, was walking across South Lincoln Avenue about 2 p.m. when he was struck by a van driven by Helen F. Kenreigh, 84, of 485 S. Broad St., Canfield. Police said Hays had a head injury.
Kenreigh's van struck Hays, who was in the crosswalk, as Kenreigh was driving west on East State and attempted to turn left onto South Lincoln, police said.
No charges have been filed.
Pollution-fix study
HANOVERTON -- Village council will review a proposed agreement with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency for the abatement of sewage pollution in the village.
Council was to vote on the agreement at its meeting Monday, but the village solicitor, Atty. James Taus, suggested some changes, which will be incorporated in the agreement council is scheduled to vote on next month.
Among other things, Taus suggested that the agreement give the village 12 months instead of six to come up with a plan for abating the pollution, which is caused by malfunctioning septic systems.
The most likely plans for abatement are to build a sewage treatment plant or tie in to the Columbiana County treatment plant at Guilford Lake.
New district director
ERIE, Pa. -- U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie, R-21st, has named a new district director to run his office operations throughout the district, which includes Erie, Crawford and Mercer County and part of Butler County.
Regina Smith of Millcreek, who had served as director of his Erie office since July, was named to her new post to succeed Jerry Knight who resigned to accept a job as director of Precision Manufacturing Institute of Meadville.
Smith has worked with English since shortly after his election to Congress in 1994, helping constituents work through problems with federal agencies. She is a graduate of Mercyhurst College with a degree in business administration.
Bleeding ulcer kills man
CAMPBELL -- The Mahoning County coroner has ruled that the death of a 39-year-old Gordon Avenue man was accidental.
Officials from the coroner's office said Victor H. Saulsberry died from blood loss caused by a bleeding ulcer. His body was found by a neighbor who called police Oct. 18.
Police said blood was found in the man's home in a bedroom, a bathroom, on a hallway wall and on a door jamb at the rear of the home.
Baseball items stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Valuable baseball memorabilia were taken from a West Side store over the weekend.
Gregory Gavin, owner of Vintage Sport Cards, 2903 Mahoning Ave., told police his business was broken into sometime between 5 p.m. Friday, when he closed it, and 8:50 a.m. Monday, when he returned. Thieves broke a section of front-door glass with a rock, reached in and unlocked the door, police said.
Among the missing items are baseballs signed by Mark McGwire and Mickey Mantle and a lithograph signed by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, assorted baseball cards and a cash register with $50 in it, the police report said.
Driver robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 41-year-old Campbell man told police he was robbed of $30 at gunpoint early Monday when he stopped for a red light at Midlothian and Rush boulevards.
The victim said the male robber, between ages 30 and 40, pointed a revolver at him and demanded money at 4:50 a.m. The robber fled on Rush, the victim said.
Seminar on sex assault
BOARDMAN -- Area law enforcement personnel are invited to attend a free seminar on the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at Boardman Government Center, 8299 Market St.
The keynote speaker is Barb Cornell, a registered nurse and coordinator of the SANE program at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
A SANE is a registered nurse trained in the collection of evidence from sexual assault victims and can be an expert witness in court.
