AUSTINTOWN -- A Madrid Drive man has been charged by the U.S. attorney's office with embezzling $21,657 from the United Steelworkers of America Local Union 4564 in Girard.
Stephen Hanlon, 47, embezzled the money between May 6, 1998, and June 9, 2000, while serving as the financial secretary of the union, according to the criminal information charge filed by the U.S. attorney's office for the Northern District of Ohio.
The charge stemmed from information collected during an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department and Office of Labor-Management Standards in Cleveland. The case has been referred to U.S. Magistrate Judge George J. Limbert for arraignment.
Bleeding ulcer kills man
CAMPBELL -- The Mahoning County coroner has ruled that the death of a 39-year-old Gordon Avenue man was accidental.
Officials from the coroner's office said Victor H. Saulsberry died from blood loss caused by a bleeding ulcer. His body was found by a neighbor who called police Oct. 18. Police said blood was found in the man's home in a bedroom, a bathroom, on a hallway wall and on a door jamb at the rear of the home.
Baseball items stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Valuable baseball memorabilia were taken from a West Side store over the weekend.
Gregory Gavin, owner of Vintage Sport Cards, 2903 Mahoning Ave., told police his business was broken into sometime between 5 p.m. Friday, when he closed it, and 8:50 a.m. Monday, when he returned. Thieves broke a section of front-door glass with a rock, reached in and unlocked the door, police said.
Among the missing items are baseballs signed by Mark McGwire and Mickey Mantle and a lithograph signed by Mantle and Roger Maris, assorted baseball cards and a cash register with $50 in it, the police report said.
Driver robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 41-year-old Campbell man told police he was robbed of $30 at gunpoint early Monday when he stopped for a red light at Midlothian and Rush boulevards.
The victim said the male robber, between ages 30 and 40, pointed a revolver at him and demanded money at 4:50 a.m. The robber fled on Rush, the victim said.
Drug-related charge
BOARDMAN -- Township police have charged a 41-year-old Pennsylvania man with possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop Monday evening.
Reports say the man was stopped on Glenwood Avenue after he failed to use a turn signal just after 6:30 p.m. While talking to the officer, reports say, the man admitted to having a crack pipe in the car.
Officers subsequently searched the car and found the crack pipe. Officers also searched the home of a female passenger in the car but found nothing.
Arrested at Wal-Mart
BOARDMAN -- Township police have charged a 47-year-old Youngstown man with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after an altercation at the Wal-Mart store on Doral Drive.
Police were called to the store by security personnel who told officers the man, who reports say was highly intoxicated, had been seen grabbing the rear ends of two women and kicking a store employee.
Reports say the two women who were grabbed and the employee refused to press charges, so officers were going to release the man. The man, however, became aggressive with officers and was arrested.
16 felony charges
AUSTINTOWN -- Daniel L. Hiles, 47, of Milton Boulevard, Newton Falls, who is reported to have taken a taxi to commit crimes, has been bound over to the Mahoning County grand jury on 16 felony charges.
Hiles appeared Monday in Mahoning County Court here on 15 counts of breaking and entering, and one count of vandalism. Bond was set at $2,500 on each charge.
William Moretz, Milton Township police chief, said Hiles is suspected of breaking into buildings and stealing money in Jackson and Milton townships and Craig Beach. The buildings include Jackson-Milton School, St. Catherine Church, Trinity Church and Lake Milton Library. Police think Hiles used a taxi service to travel from his home to various townships.
He is in the Trumbull County Jail, where he was earlier charged with break-ins in that county.
