YOUNGSTOWN -- Jeff Parks of Liberty, a Youngstown State University student trustee, is on the cover of the national magazine Student Leader.
Parks is featured in the October edition because of his "academic excellence, well-rounded involvement in campus life experiences, impeccable moral character and outstanding leadership development," said Jennifer Lind, the magazine's associate editor.
Parks, a 1998 graduate of Ursuline High School and the son of Dennis and Beverly Parks of Liberty, is a senior political science major at YSU. He is chairman of Student Government's student affairs committee and president and founding member of the new YSU chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity.
Youngstown educatorswin FirstEnergy grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three Youngstown educators were among 20 teachers from across FirstEnergy's service area to win mathematics, science and technology grants.
Pat Honen of St. Christine School won $500 for a project that challenges students to find ways to minimize waste and conserve energy in local businesses. Fran Compton of Jackson Elementary School received $500 for a hands-on project involving magnetism and electricity. And Joan Ferri of Chaney High School won $500 for a program that teaches gourmet cooking to students with special needs.
Youngstown pupilstops in Challenge 24
YOUNGSTOWN -- The following pupils placed first in the city public schools' annual Challenge 24 Contest at Youngstown State University: Kevin Daley of Volney Rogers Junior High School and Taylor Daugherty, Tracy Barron and Jacob Bennett of Kirkmere Elementary School.
Challenge 24 is a game that requires students to combine four numbers using addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division to come up with a total of 24. The winners advance to the county contest.
Sharon native electedThiel College trustee
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- John M. Hudson, president and managing partner of Hudson Companies of Hermitage, has been elected to the board of trustees at Thiel College.
Hudson, a Sharon native who now lives in Hermitage, is co-founder and president of Hudson Group Inc., co-founder and managing partner of Hudson Investment Properties and Hudson Holding Co., and co-founder of Hudson Charitable Trust Fund.
He received the 1992 Caritas Award (the Bishop of the Erie Catholic Diocese annual award for charity), the Gannon University Small Business Award in 1995, the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Award for 1997 and the Pennsylvania Family Business of the Year Award in 2000.
Seminar to addressbullying and violence
BOARDMAN -- "Preventing Classroom Violence," a seminar on bullying and diversity, will be at 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Holiday Inn in Boardman.
The seminar, for counselors, social workers, teachers and psychologists, will feature William Livisay, director of prevention and training for Pathways in Licking County, and Catherine deRicci Horwatt, program director of Gateway Vision. Workshop sponsors include the ACLD Learning Center, Northeast Ohio Special Education Regional Resource Center, Forum Health, Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic and the Mahoning County Chemical Dependency Program.
