Diver Goettschis athlete of week
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State senior diver Brandi Goettsch was named the Horizon League women's swimming and diving athlete of the week.
Last week, Goettsch qualified for the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships in the 1- and 3-meter events for the fourth straight year.
In a win over Clarion, Goettsch recorded a second-place qualifying score of 468.50 in the 1-meter dive. Against Akron, she qualified in the 3-meter with a second-place score of 278.10 and also earned a first-place score of 253.30 in the 1-meter.
Volleyball team falls
GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- The Youngstown State volleyball team lost its third straight match Friday to UW-Green Bay 28-30, 22-30, 21-30. Sophomore Colleen Royer led the Penguins (10-13, 1-10 Horizon League) with eight kills and seven digs.

New conference,new commissioner
The Northeast Athletic Conference, comprised of Bristol, Bloomfield, Lordstown, Maplewood, Pymatuning Valley and Southington high schools selected Leonard Batcha as commissioner.
Previously the Trumbull Athletic Conference commissioner, Batcha is a long-time area basketball, football and volleyball official.
The NAC also selected Cal Cavalcante as the officials assignor.
Boardman wins
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High ice hockey team defeated Poland 9-2 in the opening game of the Northeast Ohio High School Hockey Association on Friday at the Ice Zone.
Patrick Rafeedie scored two goals, while Gabe Mangenelli, Tyler Miller, Brandon Spickler, Bill Maloney, Mark Esposito, Jimmy Pipoly and Tim Cerimele each scored one for the Spartans. Matt Kominak and Drew Souder scored for Poland.
Hoop nightat Mt. Union
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College's Black Student Union will hold its annual Basketball Extravaganza Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. at the Timken building.
Proceeds will go to the Red Cross Disaster Fund and to help sponsor a presentation from the CAMPUSSPEAK program that includes a documentary film on hate crimes.
The Basketball Extravanganza is open to the public. Admission is $1 or one canned good for students and $2 or two canned goods for the public.
The Extravaganza will include four events -- the slam dunk contest, free throw and 3-point contests and the hot shots contest where players are required to shoot the basketball from various locations on the floor. Anyone can enter the contests.
Little Redmen,Poland in title game
AUSTINTOWN -- The Fighting Little Redmen defeated the Austintown Colts 34-0 in the playoffs to advance to the North Eastern Ohio Youth League 115-pound championship game.
The Redmen (10-0) will enter the game with only six points scored against them during the regular season and will battle the Poland Bulldogs Sunday at 1 p.m. in Struthers.
The Bulldogs defeated West Side Patriots to earn their berth in the title game.
Soccer officialsworking games
Twelve members of the Mahoning Valley Soccer Officials Association are officiating games in the high school regional and state tournaments.
Barry Brooks and Bob Sherman will officiate games in the state finals. Working regional games are David Anderson, Nick Atsas, Paul Fennema, Tony Gura, Ed Hermez, Bob Hobart, Cathy Licht, Vince Mastromateo, Marty Milush, Fawzi Mujahed, Brooks and Sherman.

Amling dies
LONDON, Ohio -- Warren Amling, an All-American offensive lineman at Ohio State in 1945, has died at 76.
Amling, of London, died Thursday at OSU Medical Center in Columbus. His family and the Eberle Funeral Home said he died of natural causes, but declined to elaborate.
Amling, who also played basketball for the Buckeyes, graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine and worked as a veterinarian for more than 45 years.
Blue Jackets moves
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Blue Jackets recalled center Sean Pronger from the Syracuse Crunch on Friday and placed center Brett Harkins on injured reserve.
Pronger had two goals and three assists in four games for Syracuse. He went scoreless in four games with Columbus earlier this season.
Harkins suffered an abdominal injury on Tuesday against Vancouver.
Injuries have forced the struggling Blue Jackets, who have lost six straight games, to make five roster moves in the past two days.
Before Thursday night's 2-1 loss in Calgary, Columbus recalled left wing Mathieu Darche and right wing Matt Davidson from Syracuse and sent left wing Jody Shelley back to the AHL club.
Left wing Geoff Sanderson injured his ribs and centers Tyler Wright and Mike Sillinger suffered concussions against the Flames.
