YOUNGSTOWN Donation to help establish tech center

The center should be open some time this month.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ameritech has provided $43,600 to establish the Southside Technology Center.
The center, located at Homeless Solutions on West Chalmers Avenue, will provide computer education and training programs to local youths, adults and senior citizens. The center will have nine computers.
Quality of life: "We experience firsthand the needs of local Youngstown residents and know how technology can be used to improve their quality of life," said Martin Gaudiose, chief executive officer of the Mahoning County Chemical Dependency Programs Inc.
Others involved: MCCDP, in collaboration with the Cleo Mark Block Club, the Homeless Solutions Resident Council and the Glen Park Manor Tenant's Associationm announced the grant Oct. 29.
The money is from the Community Technology Fund, established as part of the agreement approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio when SBC Communications and Ameritech merged.
Funding comes from Ameritech and is targeted at organizations that have developed innovative programs to bring technology equipment and education to Ohio residents.
"I'm proud that SBC/Ameritech has a national reputation for its generosity in funding projects that reduce the digital divide," said Steve Kristan, Ameritech's director of external affairs.
He said the center should be open some time this month.
